p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · What do you use to protect your DSLR from rain?

Hi,

I am looking to buy something to protect my camera from Rain/Snow, so that I can take some pictures during those times. I am seeing some Rainguard sleeves from B&H. Very cheap, less than $10. But before I jump, I want to know if someone has first hand experience in using these. If anyone could direct me towards an inexpensive yet effective solution, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks,
Hamim

a plastic bag from the grocery store and a rubber band works wonders.

Like Ben, this past June, the plastic bag from the grocery store worked great in the land of rain and mist, Ireland.

Be sure to have spares.. Also, carry plenty of micro-fiber cloths to wipe your lenses. Both fit easily into my photo vest....

When things really got nasty, I also had a standard cotton hand towel to wipe things down. Make sure it isn't dried with a fabric softner sheet. They actually make fabric hydrophobic.

I recommend Rainguard sleeves - many plastic bags from the store have holes in them.

I use Think Tank Hydrophobia 70-200 and 300-600, and an AquaTech SS-Zoom for my gear, when I expect to be shooting in heavy rain, or at the beach or on a ship, in high winds. I carry an OP/TECH Rainsleeve in my bag, just in case I get caught out.

Specific "rain gear" works best----if you're planning on being in inclement weather and know you'll be in wet climes while photographing.

But often it's just being "caught in the wet" and being without some sort of protection. And you'll never have that rain gear with you during these times because it's a pita and takes up valuable room in your pack. The best solution I've found is a hotel shower cap. They pack flat (some literally come in a small envelope) taking up nominal space and are light. The elastic band is perfect for holding the cap on over the camera body.

Really? How does a showercap fit the form of a DSLR - as protection only? Or can you shoot with it on? Can you show us?

Thanks.

So use the ones that don't have holes in them.

Clear plastic bag, Live View, and beastly Russian lenses that won't get damaged in the rain. Most Russian lenses are also easy enough to disassemble so in the rare event of getting water inside I can deal with it easily. (They're also dirt cheap so I'm willing to take more risks with them, which often results in some amazing shots at times when most people don't want to risk pulling their cameras out.)

They are not big in the diameter to fit a Canon 1Dx. 1D4 struggles to get it on - Too tight. Smaller camera body woks great.

I've tried the hotel shower cap a few times and it works great if you're using a smaller DSLR and lens. Easier to manage than a plastic bag. I prefer an umbrella if at hand.

Won't the AF and VR electronics malfunction if the lens is not well protected?

I use a plastic bag usually from Target, but I usually only use one of my 1 series bodies if it's raining harder.

As well as a plastic bag / lens coat to keep the body and lens dry, always use the lens hood to keeping rain drops off the glass. Shallow lens hoods can be pretty ineffective though.
