Given that most of my 'best' phots were taken with MF and LF cameras, I already knew that I wanted as large a sensor as possible (i.e. affordable).

Magnification is as magnification does. What's not to get?

James he means your sentence implies you switched to a FF Canon digital in 1974.

I'm primarily a Canon shooter because they offered a full frame sensor in 1974, when I started to switch away from film to digital.

Either you have had access to some ridiculously advanced technology through the years, or your train of thought is on another continent from his (and mine!).

Each post should have a blurry-enough shot to get closer

Name
Wilhelm is my second name and the one I use

Age
Passed 40

Occupation
Analyst, competitive intelligence

How long have you been a photographer?
Did shoot since age of 10. But interest was killed because of bad IQ and dark rooms wasnt my thing.

What motivated you to get into photography?
Went digital around 2000, ever increasing quality eventually revoked interest. Photoshop evolution added to that.

Favorite subject(s) to shoot?
People and faces. Dont do it enough.

Least Favorite subject(s) to shoot?
Things like flowers & cats.

Your greatest photography strength
Perhaps PP.

Your greatest photography weakness
Cant stand SOOC shots. Flat, boring and too far from reality. And I got no patience.

Why are you a (Canon / Nikon / Alt / Whatever) shooter?
My road was Canon, from compacts via super-zoom to APS-C and eventually FF (5D2). Soon maybe Sony.

If you were forced to describe yourself as more of an "artist" or more of a "gear head", which would it be?
Talking photography with my friends definitely a gear head, but being in the alt forum makes me feel a bit like an artist which is where I rather be

If you were forced to describe yourself using three adjectives, what would they be?
pedantic yet not
sincere
sensitive

Do you have your own website? If so, link it!
A car blog and a Flickr account

Any other hobbies?
Classic cars and I play the guitar. Distorted Ibanez.

Anything else you want to add.
I've learned a lot of things from FM and I am greatful for all you people sharing. Thanks!

How long have you been a photographer?
Since age 19.

What motivated you to get into photography?
I have a bad memory & photos help me remember how I lived out my years.

Favorite subject(s) to shoot?
People and family, which I don't do enough of. American wildcats.

People who bitch about having their picture taken.

Your greatest photography strength
Being patient & waiting for a moment to happen.

Your greatest photography weakness
Being too lazy to get out and take more pictures.

Why are you a (Canon / Nikon / Alt / Whatever) shooter?
I like Sony sensors, so Nikon and NEX for me.

I can be at either end of the spectrum, but prefer to be in the "neither" category, and just be.

Mercurial, Unforcable, ...

Name (maybe keep it to first names or nicknames)
Jonas

Age (as generic or specific as you want)
50+

Occupation (as generic or specific as you want)
I'm in health care, a trained nurse, responsible for a hospital ward for people suffering from psychotic diseases

How long have you been a photographer?
40+ witch includes a few years here and there with very few iamges taken

What motivated you to get into photography?
When starting I could, at last, do something artsy not anyone else did better than me at their first try.

Favorite subject(s) to shoot?
People, traces of people, constructions, architecture

Least Favorite subject(s) to shoot?
Pets, food, flowers and anything else already done a thousand times

Your greatest photography strength
I can be very patient and work on long term projects

Your greatest photography weakness
The same, the long term projects tend to go on and on never being done with. For periods I don't feel inspired at all.

Why are you a (Canon / Nikon / Alt / Whatever) shooter?
I have used a lot of brands, photography goes up and down for me and the equipment I use is what suits me, or what I want to try, for the period I'm in. For the moment I don't see myself getting rid of my RX1 though.

If you were forced to describe yourself as more of an "artist" or more of a "gear head", which would it be?
As I can't claim to be an artist (haven't got the eye) I guess I'm a gear head. "Always know your gear!"

If you were forced to describe yourself using three adjectives, what would they be?
I'm a boring, pessimistic realist. I don't joke about serious stuff (is there an adjective for that?). I don't like limits. Work often make me tired of people so I'm a social loner.

Do you have your own website? If so, link it!
No.

Any other hobbies?
Work, photography, writing short stories and sharing life with Elisabeth is enough for me.

Anything else you want to add.
Yesterday I recycled my cassette tape recorder. I listened to parts of a couple of tapes before unplugging the recorder. Among them a cassette with music and then my own voice telling me to agitate wait agitate wait agitate rinse add fix agitate wait... Lol. Gotta love digital.

Edgar

Age (as generic or specific as you want)
36

Occupation (as generic or specific as you want)
sales assistant (hoping to become a teacher before I die )

How long have you been a photographer?
about 10 years

What motivated you to get into photography?
I lost my grandad's camera through lack of attention when I was a kid and since then I have always kept my eye on photography. I think I bought my first camera when I could first afford it - when I earned some money working abroad. Can't explain why I did it though. My passion for alt glass really started when I sold the modern canon 85L with loss (worked in 3 jobs to afford it!) to free up funds for contax MF lenses. Then this became my dominant hobby for long years. I think I have spent about 30x more time researching the history of cameras/lenses than I have taking pictures. I hope to get the balance back (but I can't help to like the old manual cameras ).

Favorite subject(s) to shoot?
portraits
Least Favorite subject(s) to shoot?
pictures of food and the usual travel portraits (famous statue in background etc.)

Your greatest photography strength
I like to take pictures of people

Your greatest photography weakness
the worst is my inability to carry through my started projects and ideas

Why are you a (Canon / Nikon / Alt / Whatever) shooter?
alt because it is so fascinating! btw I got my first "real" M leica lens couple days ago and I am well excited about it (summicron 35mm IV)

If you were forced to describe yourself as more of an "artist" or more of a "gear head", which would it be?
I wish I could say artist but I am a good example of a gear head. Just today I broke my self made promise to keep silent about my last lens purchase and told my wife about it hoping to see a sparkle of interest. Shockingly even the "King of Bokeh" left her unimpressed!

If you were forced to describe yourself using three adjectives, what would they be?
I am an old (like old-school or outdated). outdoorsman (an awkward word but fits) who tries to be good ("tries" because I fail so often)

Do you have your own website? If so, link it!
No

Any other hobbies?
mountain walking, sword fighting(HEMA), reading, movies

Occupation (as generic or specific as you want)
IT-architect

How long have you been a photographer?
I'm not a photographer, it's a hobby I started about 3 years ago.

What motivated you to get into photography?
I bought a Samsung NX camera by chanse, and discovered how much I enjoyed photography.

Favorite subject(s) to shoot?
Anything.

Least Favorite subject(s) to shoot?
Nothing.

Your greatest photography strength
I have an eye for interesting light and colors. (Yeah right!)

Your greatest photography weakness
Flash photography, although I have started using flashes for portraits, so I'm learning.

Why are you a (Canon / Nikon / Alt / Whatever) shooter?
I'm a Sony shooter. I could have gone with any brand, it's just that since I started photography, Sony has made the products i want, the NEX-line, the RX-line and now the A7/R. For lenses, I mostly use Zeiss, because I know they will give me consistant high quality results.

If you were forced to describe yourself as more of an "artist" or more of a "gear head", which would it be?
Depends. Sometimes, I'm gear focused, sometimes I'm not.

If you were forced to describe yourself using three adjectives, what would they be?
Relaxed, sensible, innovative.

Do you have your own website? If so, link it!
Only flickr.

Any other hobbies?
Programming. Strength training. I'm at the gym 5 days a week.

First of all i'd like to greet the Alt Forums Community. I have been a long time lurker of the site, but i finally decided to join. So, Hi!

Name

Alex,
I come from Greece but live in Germany the past few years

Age

31

Occupation

Resident in Surgery

How long have you been a photographer?

I am taking Pictures of things i like for the past 6-7 years

What motivated you to get into photography?

I noticed a lack of pictures of almost everything i've done as a teenager and in my early 20's and one day i decided to change that. So i bought a film camera because they were cheap and i was a student. And i went from there...

Favorite subject(s) to shoot?

Things i like. Mostly documenting the moments of (my) everyday life, whether that is a fun night out, a cool view i happen to see, etc. I like to think of my pictures as still frames from a movie. By the way i am a huge movie fan...

Least Favorite subject(s) to shoot?

I wouldn't call it a least favorite subject, but i dont really shoot a lot of macro, or complex flash setup's. Not cause i dislike them (ok super macro insects maybe...), i just haven't come around to them.

Your greatest photography strength

A side effect from my choice of subjects, i tend to be emotionally involved in them in some way. And that feeling comes though. It doesn't always happen, but when it does, i love it.

Your greatest photography weakness

I rarely plan a shoot. I mean i dont wake up early to catch the good light, i dont search the landscape for hours to find the perfect composition. I wish i did, though... I always imagine doing that someday.

Why are you a (Canon / Nikon / Alt / Whatever) shooter?

I dont have any strong preferences. I've changed various systems so far... I started with a Nikon F90x, then bought a Pentax K100D that i later upgraded to a Pentax K20D, that i sold when i noticed i had barely used it since i bought a Nex 5, that i also sold to buy the Nex 7 that was my favorite camera until i sold it too last week to buy the Sony A7. In the meantime, i bought a Pentax MX, i tried MF with a Bronica S2A and a Pentacon Six System that i still have and use. Oh, and last year i bought a Leica M6 and dwelled into the rangefinder territory as well.

If you were forced to describe yourself as more of an "artist" or more of a "gear head", which would it be?

Neither. I dont really obsess about gear, but i understand its importance. But i cant really claim i am making great art.

If you were forced to describe yourself using three adjectives, what would they be?

Inventive, calm, driven

Do you have your own website? If so, link it!

Just a flickr account
http://www.flickr.com/photos/alextheodin/

Any other hobbies?

Too many for my own good.. Sailing, skiing, listening and playing music, Cinema among others...

Anything else you want to add.

Again, many greeting to the forum. It is nice to find people that share common passions. The forums of today are the agora of the ancient world and i am happy to participate in one and exchange opinions and knowledge through it.

Name (maybe keep it to first names or nicknames)
Stefan
Age (as generic or specific as you want)
40
Occupation (as generic or specific as you want)
Software engineer
How long have you been a photographer?
Mainly the last ten years
What motivated you to get into photography?
I like to travel and I am always drawn to architecture wherever I go. Plus, I have a son that is now ten years old
Favourite subject(s) to shoot?
Architecture, cityscapes, my little family.
Least favourite subject(s) to shoot?
Studio stuff, never had the patience to set things up properly
Your greatest photography strength
I still think I have a good eye for the subjects that matter to me
Your greatest photography weakness
No patience, neither with setting up / taking the picture, nor with post processing
Why are you a (Canon / Nikon / Alt / Whatever) shooter?
I started when I was nine years old with a Voigtlander 6x9 folder my grandfather gave me and Seagull film. Fast forward twenty years I got myself a Canon 300D and a 35/2 plus a 85/1.8. And then I came to this site and started shooting MF lenses, going trough some Zeiss, the Leica, then again Zeiss with a 1Ds and finally arrived at the Sony NEX because the 1Ds and Zeiss was too heavy to lug around town all day long. Right now I have ordered a A7 and will have to investigate the best combination of 28 and 85-100mm lenses for it. For the former I am not sure, for the latter I think my Contax G 90 will do. But my most used focal length is 28mm on FF.
If you were forced to describe yourself as more of an "artist" or more of a "gear head", which would it be?
Gear head because I don't see that much talent in myself to call me an artist
If you were forced to describe yourself using three adjectives, what would they be?
Humorous, impatient, somehow smarter than the rest
Do you have your own website? If so, link it!
Not really, neither is my flickr account up to date
Any other hobbies?
Well the house is keeping me busy, I used to sail up to the age of 27, same with skiing, hope to resume these soon
Anything else you want to add.
I was here for a long time, since the pictures of the plane cockpit with the Distagon 21 were shown in that famous thread and no matter what I keep coming back to the alt forum.
