p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Want to lighten my investment - looking for input

So I will admit up front I suffer from gear lust. That said I am looking to lighten my investment. A while back I had a 5DII and 1D IV, both of which I bought used. In the last year & 1/2 I've move them up to a 5DIII (for the superior autofocus) and to a 1DX. My original plan when I traded the 1D IV to a 1DX was to get it and go to one body but I didn't. Now rethinking this.

I do enjoy having two bodies and one good for sports. So I've given some thought to selling off the 1DX for another 5DIII to get back some cash. Would haven even considered a 7D II but it just hasn't materialized. Of course the 1DX is exceptional and hard to give up but ...

Of course I could just stay pat and have two of the best cameras on the market.

The other thing that has been pushing me to sell though is an affection for mirrorless lately. I did get involved with the Fuji X family and its been interesting. It keeps getting better and I often travel with it instead of my Canons. Their lens offering is filling out so you can pretty much do any midrange work of any kind with what they have now.

So my question, stay pat with the 5DIII and 1DX? Got to a 1DX with a mirrorless as a backup?, Go to two 5DIII? Hold on until the 7D II does show up? Stop worrying about it and just go out an shoot? Let me know what you might do.

If you're fine lugging around a 1DX then there's not really a reason to have the 5D I'd say. An EM1 and 12-40 Would be a perfect travel camera and you'd have several hundred left over afterwards.

So true. I should probably say "lighten my sunk costs"

The only exception I can think of was the 1D3s that for a few months before the 1DX was released was selling for very high prices and many people sold them off making a profit.

I don't see the problem. You have Canon's two top DSLRs. Both are unique. You apparently use both.

You want another camera -- why not buy it? Whether a 7D2 (when available) and/or a mirrorless, if you can afford it, what's the harm with multiple bodies?

I'm a bad influence -- I have so many cameras and lenses around here, even if they are the absolute top current models. I either use them, or sell them to finance others. That seems a simple proposition: if you want to finance something with your existing stock, go ahead. But it hard to understand dumping the top DSLR (D1X) for another 5D3.

I enjoy having at least one of each of Canon's sensor models on hand.

Cameras used in the last week: Nikon N80 (film), Nikon D200, Canon G10, Canon 1D3, Canon 60D, Canon 1Ds3. So, they get some use!

Well, I waited about six months too long... Right, Jim?

If you're really serious about cutting back, sell the XTi and half of your TT bags.

If you're really, really serious, sell four of your Canon lenses.

No idea why anyone would need both a 1DX and 5D3. And I did not find the AF of the 5D3 to be noticeably better than that of the 1D4.

What lenses and other items are you going to sale? Personally, I'd get rid of the 6D and all the other stuff you don't use and keep the 1DX and 1D4.

Given that North is "up", you're running towards the Best Coast.

Someone (and we know who... ;-) will slam me for saying this, but maybe you should just work with what you have for a while?

Take care,

Big White Lenses tend to hold their value and in some cases will appreciate.

Almost all lenses lose value over time. Virtually none even keep up with the typical rate of inflation. Go check out used lens prices to see the general trend. (There are a few unusual exceptions.)

I should have said used GWL's YMMV. I got such good deals that I can sell mine for more than I paid for them.

I'd pick up a a7 or a7r and buy into some RF glass. Great for traveling and street photography. Much better sensor than anything you have right now if you pick up the a7r.
