Which one will work better on 7D, in terms of zoom distance, image quality, and speed for wildlife shooting? Recommendations please.

For a particular camera, the difference between 1.4x III and 2x III is simple; the 1.4x III will have higher IQ and faster AF speed, than you would get from a further distance with a 2x III on the same lens. OTOH, for the same subject distance, the 2x III will have higher IQ than cropping an image from the 1.4x III to the same field of view. The "1.4x cropped" vs. "2x not cropped" case is especially important for the 7D, which doesn't take so well to cropping.

How much focal length do you need?

The 2x will obviously give you longer FL coverage, which is often desirable for wildlife shooting. Whether it will be enough depends on what kind of wildlife you plan to photograph, how close you can get, and your compositional preferences.

IQ with either should be acceptable, provided you use proper long lens technique and/or camera support, and allow for high shutter speeds (think 1/ 2x FL) when hand holding. You may find that you have to increase ISO to get the Tv up, and that could introduce digital "noise" into your 7D images.

As far as speed goes, you will notice a 50% decrease in AF speed using a 1.4x and a 75% decrease using a 2x.

My personal experience is that it is at least as worthwhile studying how to get physically as close as you can to your subject- keeping your safety and the wildlife's well-being in mind- as it is studying ways to increase your "reach".

Rule of thumb: A slower longer lens will always beat out a faster shorter lens with TC attached, especially when we are talking 200 + 2x vs 400. Either get the 100-400L or wait for reviews of the what looks likely to be released soon, Tamron 150-600.

If you don't already own the 70-200 and you are mostly or only going to use it with teleconverters for wildlife then I would also strongly consider just getting the 100-400L. Lets face it, for wildlife you will be at 400mm or want to be most of the time. For birds you will always be at 400 and actually want more. There have been many comparisons of the 70-200 with 2xTC vs the 100-400 at 400. Some same one or the other is slightly better but most have them pegged fairly close. Also most give the win for AF speed to the 100-400. So much easier and much less expensive to go the 100-400 route if this is for wildlife.

However, if you have good use for the 70-200 as a base lens or if you already own it, then I would get both TCs for the lens and use as needed. If on a given day 280mm is going to be enough (plus the crop factor) then just use the 1.4. Going after birds, then slap on the 2.0TC.

I see which one is the winner now. Thank you all.

Imho the 100-400L is the winner hands down. The 70-200 f2.8 II is no slouch with the 2x mkIII convertor though, albeit a little slow focusing.

This is just my personal observation using all the above combinations at one time or another.

The 70-200 hands down plain or with the 2x if you are doing up close, but with wildlife I always find myself going as long as possible and the 100-400 at 400 trumps 70-200 with a 2x for image quality in my tests. The 70-200 with 2x isn't bad it is just the 100-400 at 400 is better.

According to all others experience, 100-400mm L is a better choice. My hope is that the next generation of this lens needs to come out soon since its specs is very old comparing to 70-200mm L II.

100-400 is definitely a better choice on the long end, despite its age. Have a look for yourself:

I vote for Sigma 50-500 instead of the 100-400L which is not that good.
Upon testing, I found the new Sigma OS 50-500 just as good in IQ and then some since it has image stabilization.
Older non OS version of 50-500 is also excellent and marginally worse than 100-400L, if you are going to pixelpeep. extra 100mm is a huge bonus and the price tag of the older one is around $700-800 used.
Push-pull design of the 100-400 is not for everyone...certainly not for me.
