Hi all - Looking to pick up one of these golden oldies to use in strictly manual mode on my Fuji XE1/2 for birding and maybe some macro. Expect to be on a tripod most of the time. Effective FL is 450mm

Understand that the 4.5 is much smaller, and faster and closer focusing but that the IQ is perhaps a bit "meh".

Whilst the 4 is big, faster and big.

Appreciate hearing from anyone who has owned or shot both.

Also wondering about using either with a TC

Thnx

Throughout the history of Nikon's 300mm line, newer has ALWAYS been better.

If you are working in an area where quick focus and tracking is a must have.. The newer 300's have done just that. For some folk, the ones that don't require the acquisition at the speed of light, the older models work great...

Where do you think all those sports images have come from throughout the years.

They'll do the job, you just have to a better shooter..

Thanks gents - I appreciate your weighing in. Newer is no doubt better but in a strictly manual application I won't get the benefit. Going to have to work on my skills.

Christopher, I have used the 300/4.5 IF-ED on the X-Pro just for more distant subjects, but it worked for me. Clean copies of this lens are can be found for little money - worth a try in my opinion. Good luck!
