Ok.....so I upgraded my D90 this last week to the D7100. I do alot if aircraft and moving subject photography. I am having problems finding a good setting for my focusing. Im not getting sharp images. I would have to also include I am shooting with a 70 to 300 vr lens. I will soon be buying an Nikon 80 to 200 af-s ED f2.8 lens and im hoping that will fix some of my issue. Can anyone give a suggestion on a good set up for the focusing?

not without more information.......

1. what settings are you using

2. what are you photographing that gives you problems

3. what is the description of you your "not getting sharp images"

I've shot over 12k images so far with mine, including 3 weeks in Africa, hummingbirds in Arizona, dog shows in Texas where I live......all using the new 80-400, an old 70-200 VR I, an ancient 24-85 and several other lenses and all produce great photos. I use different settings for different types of photography.

About the only thing I can say as general advice is that this camera is, if anything, more sensitive to mishandling and poor technique than similar cameras with smaller sensor sizes. You need to be holding the thing as steady as possible and release the shutter as softly as possible.

will be waiting on your additional info

AF-C with single point or 9 point dynamic focusing is probably best for your type of subject. The 70-300 is not one of Nikon's sharpest lenses, especially beyond 200mm and the D7100 will let you see it. The 80-200 is much more suited to the D7100's very demanding sensor.

Have you tested the combo to make sure it CAN be critically sharp first?

This sounds a bit like all the threads from D7000 upgraders who claimed they got defective bodies and hadn't fine tuned and hadn't upped their shutter speeds to match the new sensor. "Just sayin' ", as some are wont to say here on the board

I had the same experience moving from my D70 to the D90 and then again when I moved to the D71k.

My impression was that the 70-300 wasn't particularly sharp on the D90 until I mounted it on a monopod which much improved the images. But I never felt it was critically sharp. I got a 300 f4 which was much much better. On the D71K the 300 f4 was very good but not great until I mounted it on a tripod.

I'm saying that good glass and technique count for a lot and you need to improve both when you move up to a higher density sensor.

i used the 70-300vr with the d90 and d7000 for a few years and found it to be a good performer right through its range.
with a higher pixel count i did find that technique is more critical to obtain good results.

I'd toss your 7100 and lens on a tripod and take a picture at base iso, 100mm, 1/200th ss, and see what you think.

Then, I'd try a flash, AF-S, so you get the flash assisted focus.

The only issue I've found with the 7100 involves the right combination of a busy / contrasty fore or background with a not so contrasty subject. The 7100 seems to radically and randomly miss focus once in a while under these conditions; however, there's always a portion of the image that is tack sharp. Just not what I wanted.

Thank you everyone for your input.......going to spend the day tomorrow trying all that has been suggested. I think its just a matter of a learning curve with this awesome body and then hopefully by the end of the week....teaming it up with a 80-200 AF-2 lens that I had awesome results with on my D90 in my previous married life. Then to find a TC 20 at a reasonable price too is my next mission.

The 70-300VR is an "ok" lens for a light weight zoo package, but it certainly is not sharp at the long end. For your type of shooting, a professional lens such as the 300/4 or the new version of the 80-400VR will more than satisfy your needs. I have found the D7100 to be a considerable upgrade from the D7000 , and coupled with either of the above two lenses, it is excellent for birding and wildlife (in my experience) and should be likewise for your type of shooting.

It might need focus adjust. IME, that can make a BIG difference with D7100. I was not impressed at all with my 70-200 VR on D7100 until I figured out it needed a few points of focus adjust. And it's really easy to do (focus consistency on D7100 is excellent).

When you have it on tripod, you might just shoot a set of photos at -10, -5, 0, +5, +10 and see if it points you in a direction to focus adjust your camera for that lens.
