p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Thinking of selling my 24-70 in favor of 35/85 combo. Am I crazy?

I'm hoping for some feedback on what I'm considering doing. I always considered the Nikon 24-70 my favorite lens(although a bit short) until I bought the Sigma 35 1.4. I've never used a better lens and it's amazing right from 1.4 on. The 85 1.4 is almost as great.

I find myself using the 35 1.4 and the 85 1.4 most of the time. I just wonder if I'd have serious sellers remorse down the road. A great zoom is nice.

If I sold the 24-70, I would likely give the new Sigma 24-105 a try when it comes out as a walk around lens. I never liked the Nikon 24-120 and tried it twice.

This way, I'd use the 35/85 most of the time have the 24-105 for casual stuff(unless the lens gets terrible reviews), and still have my 14-24(I'd never part with that) and the 70-200 f4 as well.

I'm hoping someone will jump in and either tell me I've lost my marbles or it sounds like a good plan.

Thoughts?

I've ditched the 24-70 twice. I like you have the 35 & 85 prefer them to the 24-70. I have the 24-85mm for studio stuff when I need it. The 24-85 is great for the money, especially on the B&S.

I much prefer primes, but sometimes zooms are necessary.

I'd have all 3 lenses. I'd only ditch the 24-70 if you felt like carrying two bodies all the time.

I'm of the thinking that if you have allot of overlap and find yourself preferring to use one particular set up most of the time like you say, then an expensive lens collecting dust makes little sense

I've recently been asking myself the same question. The 24-70 is just so damn useful though…

I almost made the exact same change after I got the Sigma 35 1.4. Part of my issue was that the 24-70 was a bit heavy and bulky to carry around for walk around purposes. But I just couldn't give up the versatility, so I ended up compromising a little. I sold my Nikon 24-70 and bought the new Tamron 24-70 VC. There was a rebate going on at the time, so I made a few hundred dollars profit and ended up with a lens I like every bit as much but was smaller, lighter, and had VC.

I own the 24G, new Sig35, new 50 1/8, new 85 1/8 and love my 105f2. I have been dealing with the same question, "should I sell my 24-70?" The one great area where the 24-70 shines is at events and weddings. I still do enough events that I keep it. The focus speed and surprisingly good 70FL portraits makes it a keep for fast changing environments. Like you I prefer my primes and like to have creative control. Many times clients don't relate to this depending on the type of event you are shooting. So for me the 24-70 is still a necessary bread and butter tool. I prefer two cameras with two primes and a third with 24-70 at weddings. But now I'm moving away from weddings so I'm down to two bodies one being a D7000 the other a D800. I do like the 24-70 on my D7000 so I have another reason to hang on to it. It's nice to have choices while shooting unpredictable events. The only part that would lack for me in a dual D800 35/85 combo would be the focus speed of the 85 other than that it would depend on what you shoot. The 24-70 as you know is a pretty fast and accurate focusing lens! It's a hard to sell for me. I keep tempting myself to do it but always find myself feeling glad that I've kept it. I do agree that the 24-85 might be an option but I've been spoiled by the 24-70 speed. Box up your 24-70 and mentally put it out of mind as though you sold it and see what happens

What I bring with me changes based on what I am shooting. My most often used setup is the 14-24, sigma 35mm f1.4, 70-200 f2.8 VII, and TC 2x III. If I know I am going to be shooting very low light I usually uses the Nikon 24mm f1.4g, 50mm f1.4g, 85mm f1.4g and the sigma 35mm f1.4. So I have thought about giving up the 24-70 f2.8 too, but I have found that in certain situations its versatility is unmatched, which is why I keep it. I am not sure a f4 would cut is for me, since I really like having the f2.8 for low light and the dof. I have found that if I have to uses 1 lenses only the 24-70 is usually the most useful.

Jonathan, as someone else noted above, unless you're carrying 2 bodies, the 35 + 85 combo just isn't as practical. I also sold a 24-70 in favor of that combo, but ended up picking one up again. Happy to have the 24-70 again and don't feel tempted to let it go, even as much as I love the primes.

I shot in an old ranch today with the D4 and two primes: 28 1.8G and 200 f/2. I really wished I had the 24-70 instead. I had to switch back and forth and that just kills the momentum...not to mention dust!

Here's something else: why not try a 24/1.4 with a 85/1.4? I sort of cheat with the 24/1.4G on a D800. Can crop to get the 24-50 range easily and still have ridiculously good DPI + detail. And for the 50-70, can take a couple of steps in. High resolution sensor + super-sharp lens = no need for 24-70 zoom.

I actually started shooting with primes before zooms, and feel more comfortable with 24/85 than the 35/85. The only zoom I do enjoy using is the 70-200/2.8 VR II, and I usually use it alongside my 24/1.4G for events or shoots.

The 24-70 has a bit more distortion than I would like at the 24-28 range. The 24/1.4 is much better (although you still have to be careful to step back a bit if possible). I can see the Sigma 35/1.4 + Nikon 85/1.4 being a good combo, but only if you're shooting with two bodies. With one body, the 24-70 is likely the better option.

It isn't as practical, and the 24-70 will get you the shot.

However, in terms of IQ, two bodies fitted with primes can't be beat.

The two ways of working couldn't be more different, and it is a highly personal decision.

IMHO, one of the reasons photogs are very interested in mirrorless or compact FF bodies is that they can see the potential for weight and size reduction - putting fast primes over high quality sensors in small bodies, is, for some, nirvana.

I own the sigma 35 and 85 1.8G and just purchased the 24-70. It's heavy but the zoom range and focus speed is very convenient. The IQ is also amazing for a zoom lens.

It's a conundrum, Jon. One of those great lenses I never liked shooting with...
too much bulk for the FL covered. There's no doubt, you'll figure it out.

My combo is the 24/1.4 and 85/1.4 on a D800E.
When I need the flexibility of a zoom I use my 24-120VRII. I know. It's not as good as the 24-70, but it's lighter, cheaper and gives me more range.

I just couldn't imagine working without the 24-70. It's always the first piece of glass out of my bag and it always comes back out for the end of the evening. Just can't wait to save up for the 14-24

I could never ditch my 24-70

but I would gladly add the 85 & 35 to my collection.

What kind of shooting do you do?

I like those three lenses for different things [though my details are a little different - Nikon 35 f/1.8G & 85 f/1.8G plus the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 (non-BIM)].

The 35mm is my creative walk-around and (close-to) Nifty Fifty FOV on my D300s.
The 85mm is my portrait lens - I'm really enjoying melting backgrounds and how insanely sharp this lens is.
The 28-75 is my flexible lens - if I'm shooting at an event, having the zoom and reasonable speed are a big plus.

Honestly, I'm not sure I'd want to deal with the bulk/heft of thee Nikon 24-70, but I'm not a working pro.

Also, I'd give it some time since you already have the primes in-hand unless you have a pressing need for the funds...

I sold my 24-70 to fund a 300/2.8 early this year. I was in love with the lens and missed it like hell. I went through a Tokina 16-28, 35/2, 28/2.8, 50/1.4, etc. trying to fill the void. I really regretted getting rid of it.

The combo that made me forget all my woes of missing the 24-70 was the 28/1.8, 50/1.8, and 85/1.4. In some situations, it sucks not having a zoom, but in most situations it's no issue throwing on a different lens. Primes are generally small enough to throw in a pocket so you don't need to lug around a bag or anything. If I had the funds, I'd definitely swap it around to 24/1.4, 35/1.4, 50/1.8, and 85.
