Considering it, for fashion. But leery of the price and how useful it will be. I don't think they'll sell more than a handful so I'm not expecting to see it secondhand anytime soon or else I would wait for early adopters and buy used. It looks like a great lens, but very undecided about it.

I am in NYC, so I have decided to rent one (when available) and report back.

Very curious, can't wait.

Love the lens and optics, price is ok, but not too sure about the manual only. I like manual but don't really want to deal with that on a fast paced commercial shoot where clients depend on the image to be in focus. I don't know many fashion photographers shooting manual focus these days as manual on a DSLR isn't the most consistent to get right.

I have used the Otus now for a week together with d800, weather has been bad here in south Sweden with rain.

Here are some pictures, many of them at F 1,4

Lars Kjellberg a old friend wrote a mail to me who also describes nice what I also feel about OTUS

Lars is known for many things and is a legend in photography and technology here in Sweden. He started old Photodo and real MTF by Hasselblad , http://www.photodo.com/topic_140.html http://www.photodo.com/topic_110.html, http://www.profotos.com/education/promag/articles/zonesystem/zone3/index.shtml etc etc etc

I am on the same line as you Michael. Finally, it feels like you can get that wonderful hard-described oversize feeling again (MF and larger cameras ) , without bothering with the big camera and a lot of toil and trouble. Pictures are amazingly beautiful and one can readily use the full aperture for the shortest possible depth of field. Thinking of selling my two zooms and buy an Otus. Feel like all the pixels in the D800 finally coming into its own.

Interesting lens and there is nothing like owning the best. The manual focus is not something I can use now. Not sure for people photography if it would be the lens to have. Is there something like "too sharp"?

You can get the Zeiss 55mm f1.8 mount E-mount which has almost the same sharpness http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/lens-widget-fullscreen?compare=true&lensId=sony_zeiss_fe_55_1p8_za&cameraId=sony_a7r&version=0&fl=55&av=1.8&view=mtf-ca&lensId2=zeiss_otus_55_1p4&cameraId2=nikon_d800&version2=0&fl2=55&av2=1.4

The Zeiss 55mm E mount is less than $1000 - even if you have to buy a new Sony A7R, the total is still $1000 less than getting a Zeiss Otus.

Of course, it's much smaller and so less impressive to customers. But you get a new body and save money

I got to shoot an Otus and a Sigma 50 1.4 Art side by side this past weekend at a wedding I second shot for a friend. I'll tell you right now, if you can get one, the Art is 95% the lens the outs is and it has autofocus. I'm pretty good at manual focusing and had trouble with the outs at 1.4 until I put it on my A7 and used focus peaking. Then I was able to nail it almost all the time.

Once I get my 50mm art, I'll be a happy camper.

Also, I had to turn in the memory cards to the primary shooter, once he gives them back and gives me permission, I'll post the comparison pics
