At 600 mm even with a tripod, unless you have the best of the best tripods and gimbal and its a low to no wind day...IS will still have plenty to do. I wouldn't make 'tripod sensing' be a make or break for a lens like this.

p.18 #2 · p.18 #2 · Tamron announces 150-600mm Ultra-Telephoto Zoom Lens

I noticed on the Tamron website that this lens has some degree of weather sealing. Gasket at the mount at least!

For $1069.... If it offered better IQ than the 70-200 II + 2x III (which I thought was pretty darn good) I would be very impressed. It wasn't the most sharp lens with the 2x III wide open, but stopped down to just f/6.3 or f/7.1 it really was quite good.

I don't expect perfection and super-telephoto prime sharpness... But I would expect it to be darn good at the same time. With the great price, zoom range, IS, weather sealing and the five year warranty on top of it (and Roger saying their warranty service is excellent to boot)... I just decided to pre-order it. Unless some bad reviews roll in (and I would cancel it), I figure it is worth a try. My final cost ended up being $975 after using some coupon code I had from previous purchase, so the price was quite good

I have faith that this could be a really great budget super-tele... A poor mans 200-400L! For the zoo stuff, planes and my amusement park photography I do, as long as the AF is good I will be happy. I am not doing birds in flight or anything, so I won't require perfect accuracy.

Here is hoping this lens ends up being another Sigma 35... Under priced but over delivers.

The referenced French video had cc (closed captions) which offers an English caption that effectively translates most of the dialogue. Also the Tamron 70-300 is probably the best zoom tele that I have used under $500. I think my actual cost was $350 with a rebate. So I believe it is possible to up size that lens, maintain performance and keep the cost in the same ball park as the Sigma 150-500mm with perhaps better IQ at the long end.

According to a recent user comment the AF is faster than the 70-300VC.

I use a cane pod with the 7D W/ grip +2 C III and the 70-200 mk II and the older 6 sided Bogen quick release plate .
While it is heavy with out 'pod , I can hold it for that candid smile .
Most of us don't need a perfect lens anymore than a 1500 dollar printer . While we may want them , until we hit the lottery , we make do . Adding tubes , extenders , diopters and other things , we do the best we can .
While I can not afford a 300 2.8 II , I did save up and got the 70-200 II , then added the 2X II . That combo is better than just having the 100-400 .
Would I notice the IQ difference between the new Tammy 150-600 and the 300 2.8 II +2 X II - NO , I can not even afford to rent the 300 2.8 II .
But by the same reasoning [ fact ] I can not see the difference between using a UV filter and not . In March , if lens pans out and money [ xmas bills ] OK , I will get one , try it out and either keep it or return it .
It is probably more how good I am at making it work , than how good the lens is .

Good point. When I first got my 100-400L, I did not appreciate how much technique needs to improve to shoot at 400mm, even with IS. This was my first time shooting at 400mm, previously only having shot at 250mm.

The new owners of this lens who will be entering the super-tele range for the first time need to remain patient and practice shooting at long focal lengths. Investing in a monopod or tripod should also be strongly considered.

Before saying "this lens isn't sharp!" be sure to eliminate all variables. I imagine atmospheric conditions will make 600mm really tough, even if you have everything else under control.

When I look at the translated website with the 100% crops of the sign, it seems to compare rather well to the 500/1.4x combo. Better than I would expect. Less focal length though.
The comparisons to the 300/2x combo lead me to believe that something is wrong with the focus or a bad copy of the 300 or 2x tele. I would expect this combo to stand up to the new lens from what I have heard from 300 owners in the past.

Yes , my shots improves a lot with the monopod , the canepod helped . I have 5 or 6 tripods [ wife gives away by loaning out on no return plan ] but they are a pain to use / set up .
I found live view really helps and sense I use IS on monopod / canepod [ I prefer 5.6 or 8 ] the little I moved still allows for a good DOF .
It seems the 35-350 is a little better from about 325 to 350 than the 70-200 mk II + 2 X III at same mm . It might be the subject or just me since I don't shoot same thing and compare .
Even on the 70-200 and 'pod , sometimes the IS kicks in - learned to use burst
I also found that in any wind , a rubber hood seems better than the plastic one .
I have been watching ebay and emailed a few sellers - no one seems to carry a 95 mm rubber hood

Yes, with the 300mm f/2.8 II and the 2xTC III, I know there must be a degradation in IQ over the bare lens; it's just that I can't really see it. That's why the early information that this new Tamron zoom matches this IQ left me skeptical even as I was ordering it myself. Oh, I will be extremely pleased if it's true.

As a side note: That combination does slow the autofocus somewhat for me. But, I don't have a 1DX!

Yes, I agree it does slow it, I just don't find the amount of slow down to be a major hindrance or a factor that makes me second guess using the 600 f/5.6 combo. With the 1200 f/8 combo, I will strongly consider what I'm shooting before going to that level. Usually I want to be working perched or slow swimming birds. I have shot swans and eagles in flight but the keeper rate is low with the 1200 f/8.

They used a 300L I instead of II, there are some differences between the two.

I may just do that too...Just depends how the IQ stands up on the Tammy. I have a hard time believing it'll match a 6000$ lens at that pricepoint though I am optimistic.

At that price, it does not have to match a $6,000 lens. Tamron is smart enough to know that there are thousands of photographers wanting a 500mm-600mm range lens that will just come close to the IQ of the 100-400 at 400mm at a price they can afford.

Look how many 50-500 and 150-500 lenses that Sigma has sold.

Even if it is just 80% of the performance, at 20% of the price, it would be a pretty darn good proposition.

p.18 #15 · p.18 #15 · Tamron announces 150-600mm Ultra-Telephoto Zoom Lens

I look at it this way (and this is only my viewpoint): I have a 500 VI that I shot almost always with a 1.4x, giving my 700mm. I almost always shoot at f/8 for birds. The samples thus far are all wide open (I haven't seen anything shot at f/8) and thus far have all looked very good. So, f/8 should be better. As far as AF speed goes, given I'm shooting with a 1.4x, and judging by the speed of the new Tamron 70-200 VC, I would expect them to be very similar.

So what do I give up? Ability to shoot at f/4 (5.6 with TC), 100mm.

What do I gain? A large weight reduction, updated VC, and some money in my pocket.

I'm willing to take the chance.

This lens excites me quite a bit! Heres something I've notice over the last few days! There are several nice 500/4's on the Buy&Sell at good prices right now and not a lot of selling. I think several are waiting for some real world FM members photos and dissection of this new Tamron lens. I know I'm very interested but I can wait and see what some think before I hit the "order button"

Even with motorsports, f/8 is typically just fine, and is the reason I plan to pick up one of these Tamron's to use alongside my 400 DO with 1.4 TC, and we'll see if the Tamron can keep up with it throughout 2014. A big ask of it, but you never know.
