Tamron announces 150-600mm Ultra-Telephoto Zoom Lens
Tamron has announced a 150-600mm f/5-6.3 image stabilized zoom lens for full-frame DSLRs. It is designed with 20 elements in 13 groups and a minimum focus distance of 2.7m. The front group contains three LD (Low Dispersion) glass elements (two in the first group, one in the third) for enhanced optical correction effectiveness, enabling the lens to thoroughly compensate for on-axis aberrations at the telephoto end.

The new ultra-telephoto zoom includes Vibration Compensation, Ultrasonic Silent Drive technologies and weights only 4.30 lbs.
Pricing and availability have not yet been announced but the lens will be compatible with Nikon, Canon and Sony mounts.

Product Highlights
  • 4x ultra-telephoto zoom lens with a focal length range of 150mm to 600mm
The focal length range of this lens was extended by 50mm on the wide-angle side and 100mm on the telephoto side compared to the existing model A08, making it possible to take even more striking photographs of birds, wildlife, sports, and other distant subjects. Mounted on APS-C DSLR cameras, it has a stunning near1000mm telephoto equivalent focal length range of 233mm to 930mm.

  • World class image quality
Employing 20 elements in 13 groups and boasting an advanced optical design, the lens delivers a superior balance of resolution and contrast for sharp, clear images. The front group contains three LD (Low Dispersion) glass elements (two in the first group, one in the third) for enhanced optical correction effectiveness, enabling the lens to thoroughly compensate for on-axis aberrations at the telephoto end. The lens also adopts eBAND Coating, developed from state-of-the-art coating technologies, and conventional BBAR (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection) Coating to greatly suppress ghosting and flare even when shooting under adverse lighting conditions.

  • Achieves a 600mm focal length in a compact easy-to-handle package
Ingenious optical design features minimize the movement of lens groups within the lens when zooming. This reduces the amount of barrel extension needed to cover the complete focusing range, making the entire lens more compact.

  • Beautiful background blur effects
Adopting a 9 blade circular diaphragm enables users to create beautiful background blur effects (Bokeh), which provide even greater potential for creative expression. This circular diaphragm retains a nearly circular shape even at two stops down from its maximum aperture.

  • VC (Vibration Compensation) mechanism creates greater opportunities for sharper handheld photography
Tamron’s proprietary VC (Vibration Compensation) image stabilization system uses a three-coil system, delivering significantly sharper images and creating greater opportunities for handheld ultra-telephoto photography.

  • Comfortable autofocus
Tamron’s new SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD features a USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive) ultrasonic motor drive for swift and accurate AF response, it delivers high torque, very fast response times, and very low noise. The full-time manual focus mechanism allows users to make fine manual focus adjustments at any time even when AF is engaged.

  • New elegant, high-class external finish
Tamron has upgraded the cosmetic design and finish of this lens to create a more sophisticated, high-end look in keeping with the demands of discerning full-frame DSLR users. Employing a sophisticated linear pattern rubber grip on the zoom and focus rings and an attractive and stylish tungsten silver brand ring, this newly designed model accentuates its visceral presence with understated elegance and class.

  • Easy-to-use tripod mount
The tripod mount has been completely redesigned to provide superior stability, durability, ease of use, and portability.

  • Comes with "SILKYPIX Developer Studio for Tamron", RAW image development processing software for Tamron’s SP lenses
The SILKYPIX Developer Studio software can develop high-quality images from RAW data, incorporating adjustments that can express the personal style and taste of the photographer. These include white balance, color, sharpness, and the tonal curves recorded by digital cameras. The SILKYPIX Developer Studio for Tamron provides a range of functions, in addition to the basic adjustment capabilities, such as correcting aberrations (chromatic aberrations of magnification, distortion, peripheral light fall-off), based on the optical data. Used in tandem with Tamron’s SP series lenses - renowned for their high-depiction capability - this advanced technology efficiently produces images that meet photographers’ most exacting demands.

Rumor sites are reporting that Tamron will announce a new lens. Most sites are reporting it to be a 150-500 f 5-6.3 VC lens but the pictures that are posted clearly read 150-600 and a patent is filed for this lens. Will be interesting if it has any decent IQ at 600. And also interesting to see what the weight will be.

Wow, I hope it's true that it's a 150-600. I assume it will be f/6.3, but that's more palatable on a 600mm than 500mm and it lies about the aperture anyway, so we can use a 1.4x TC and get a reported f/8.

Scary. I don't know why I have 'the fear' when I see these lenses. Hopefully it proves to be more than an experiment in outrageousness.

Can't complain about Tamron pulling a Sigma a la 120-300/2.8 OS | S, though you have to wonder why they didn't accommodate drop-in filters. Even a decent protection filter at 95mm will hurt, let alone a polarizer.

At $1500 the IQ will not be so good. I wish someone would make a sharp 200-500/5.6, but it would probably be at least $5K.

Well if it is no better than their 200-500, it does not interest me. Probably also does not have a focus-limiter, which is just stupid.

The Sigma 120-300/2.8 lenses don't take d.i. filters either, and they have a 105mm front thread.

And sadly that's still less than half the Canon 200-400 price, so $5K would be a veritable bargain.

I'm not sure I believe that $1500 price. That'd be too cheap if it were 500mm let alone 600mm. I'd expect coke bottle performance at the long end if true.

Yeah. Do you remember that awful Tamron 200-400/5.6 about 20 years ago?

Oh yeah, I came oh so close to getting one, but luckily fate intervened and it didn't happen. After I saw real world feedback I was horrified how bad it was.

The current 200-500 is decent enough, but I am hoping this new Tamron is more like it's newer lenses and a real step up in performance, has to be at least as good as the Sigma 50-500 ins the 50-200 range and a fair bit better in the 300-500/600 range.

I have their 70-300 VC and its a great lens for its price, very sharp and VC works well. If it comes close to the recent 70-300, then I will put it on my list. If not, then 500-600 remains out of my league for now.

I'm hoping they learned their lesson from 200-500mm. This might be interesting if the IQ has improved plus it has VC. If its at $1,500 then the 95mm filter is "affordable." :-) I will wait and see what the feedback is from the early adopters.

Here is what the press release says about image quality:

" 2. World class image quality

Employing 20 elements in 13 groups and boasting an advanced optical design, it delivers a superior balance of resolution and contrast for sharp, clear images. The front group contains three LD (Low Dispersion) glass elements (two in the first group, one in the third) for enhanced optical correction effectiveness, enabling the lens to thoroughly compensate for on-axis aberrations at the telephoto end.

The lens also adopts eBAND Coating*¹, developed from state-of-the-art coating technologies, and conventional BBAR(Broad-Band Anti-Reflection) Coating to greatly suppress ghosting and flare even when shooting under adverse lighting conditions. "

Compared to what they said about the 70-300 VC in 2010:

"Unparalleled optical performance in a fast and steady telephoto zoom lens
In the pursuit to achieve the most outstanding image resolution in the 70-300mm class, Tamron’s Anniversary lens - the SP AF70-300mm F4-5.6 Di VC USD (Model A005) - utilizes an advanced optical design that features a LD (Low Dispersion) and an XLD (Extra Low Dispersion) lens element made from specialized materials that prevent chromatic aberration. As a result, the SP AF70-300mm F4-5.6 Di VC USD (Model A005) boasts sharper contrast and greater descriptive performance than all others in its class."

It won't be a true 600mm (even when focused at infinity).
On top of that, it will also have severe focus breathing at MFD, further (probably dramatically) reducing the focal length.
And aperture starts at f5! 150mm f5! Too slow, IMHO... F6.3 at 600mm is perfectly understandable, f5 at 150mm not so much.

And for $1500, quite honestly I don't expect good IQ from such a large zoom.
Of course, both variants of the sigma 50-500 have a reputation for good IQ (and it's a 10x zoom)... so we will see.
I don't have much expectations, though....

p.s.
I hope I'm wrong.

You sound awfully sure of that, how?

For faster 150mm, use your 70-200. After all, this is not going to replace a 70-200, but rather to supplement it.

Stranger things have happened in the past (Sigma 35/1.4, etc.)
