Caused by heavy snows?
Or by the reach of hungry deer?
Or a bit of both?
To this city boy, it was a fun mystery to see.

I've seen elk eating the bark off trees, so who knows ~ Ron

I had the same thoughts the first couple times I went to RMNP. Then on one trip, I saw them doing a controlled burn in the aspens near Moraine Park. I think that was what was scarring the aspens.

Great photo Charlie and I'm with Howard on that those are burn marks.

There is a younger tree in the middle that looks like it has areas of missing bark that look relatively fresh. Also one a bit to the left. I'd go with elk too. Jasper is full of trees that are scarred up from them. Interesting shot Charlie.

These are from the elk eating the bark. Basically scars the tree, just like when people carve their names into the bark.

Such are the mysteries of nature Charlie. Very nice shot. A reply to and eagle question you posed.

Ted-
Your narrative MUST be poetry, since I can't understand a word of it .
But the series I understand. And really enjoy.
Unless they're fighting over food or nesting sites, I've heard very little about eagles fighting each other just for the sake of fighting.
The lower eagle in the first few images seems to be the aggressor, but as they tumbled downward it looks like they got their claws tangled and couldn't release for a few seconds or so.
Was food initially involved here?
Charlie

Charlie, the eagle on the top was the aggressor. No food involved but the choosing of each other as a mate might have been the cause. Thanks for the reply.

Notice how the marks on the trunks stop at about the same level the leaves start. I think it's likely that this is no coincidence--the elk can eat the bark and the leaves up to a certain height. Some of the parks here in Indianapolis have a major deer problem and the tree leaves almost all start around five feet above the ground.
