Official: Nikon Df DSLR camera announced
The new Nikon Df officially sets the record for the world’s lightest full frame DSLR. This pentaprism-equipped camera, sports an old school retro look and feel, and is packed full of dials for almost all important functions. Plus, Nikon shooters are sure to enjoy the company’s standard F-mount compatibility.

The birth of this new baby signifies a fusion of the modern day DSLR and the early day SLR/rangefinder cameras. Yes, you will have to say goodbye to your video, pop-up flash and 1/8000 shutter speed, but in exchange you get the added benefits of the D4 sensor for a fraction of the price, in a smaller and almost twice lighter camera - weighing only 760g.

Main features:
  1. 16.2MP full frame sensor
  2. 2016-pixel RGB image sensor
  3. 39-point AF system with 9 highly sensitive cross type sensors
  4. Dedicated mechanical dials for shutter speed, ISO sensitivity, exposure compensation, and exposure modes
  5. 3D color matrix metering II
  6. Shutter speed: 1/4000–30 s in steps of 1/3 EV with main command dial, bulb, time, X200
  7. Compatible with all F-Mount current AF-S, AF-D and AF Nikkor lenses
  8. Native ISO range: 100-12,800 (incl. ISO 50 and ISO 102,400)
  9. 5.5 fps for up to 100 shots
  10. Flash sync speed: 1/250 sec.
  11. 3.2" LCD screen
  12. Expeed 3 processor
  13. Dimensions: 5.6 x 4.3 x 2.6" (143.5 x 110 x 66.5mm)
  14. Weight: 760g (1.68 lb / 26.81 oz)

Now that we have the first full images of the DF, let's do what we do best and "analyze" it.

Ok, let me start by saying how cool it is that it has a threaded shutter button!

ok, so the front dial is the aperture control then. I like the looks of the camera. Not sure if I had imagined the aperture control to look like that but I´m not going to complain and think Nikon released a fine looking retro camera there.

Credits to Nikon for the shutter speed control and ISO under/over exposure controls. Exactly the way I would want them to be.

Are we sure it's a control dial? It looks like it would be very awkward to operate.

Yep, I´m sure. There is no other front dial and nothing else that could control aperture on G lenses. The camera shown however has a G lens on it. Yep, it´s a dail and I actually think it´s not at all that awkward to operate. Keep in mind that there is no big grip in the way like on a D600 or D800. Just a little grip that actually stops far enough below the top plate of the camera o allow your right hand index finger to operate the (what I suppose is a) dail.

The strap lug is a major PITA though because it´s in the way of operating said dail

I agree. I think that aperture will be set via the rear command dial.

I have to agree since there's a dial on top to set shutter speed.

I like how the black one looks from the front, but I like the top of the silver one better. Decisions...decisions.

Like: shutter speed dial, ISO & compensation dials, retro prism, no pop-up flash
Dislike: way too many buttons, knobs and weird protrusions.
Overall: I'll have to see what the viewfinder is like.

It has the on/off switch around the shutter release like the nikon FM. Even though my FM2 is black it doesn´t have that switch so I will go for silver. If that makes sense

I don't quite understand it. If there is no size advantage or useful manual focusing assistance than what is the point?

Well that's exactly the thing we don't know - how the manual focussing works. Just a dot and I'm out but I feel there will be more. Wasn't there talk of a hybrid camera - maybe this mean AF and MF? But how? I guess we'll see tomorrow.

I think the biggest question is price. and what does this offer over a D600? Just retro looks? If we're talking $3k+ then it's a non-starter, imo. I could see it priced between the D600 and D800 though. Maybe $2299.
