| p.1 #8 · Build your own camera! |
I tend to think that it would be far more interesting to disassemble and put together say a Canon S100 or similar compact camera rather than to build this pre-built one. It could be a fun project between parents and kids if you're trying to get them interested in photography (experiment etc.), but I'm not certain what else it could do for you.
Personally, since other people are joking about it in this thread, if I was to build a camera, it would probably include the 40MP back from a Phase (so medium format as opposed to 35mm FF and 40MP is more than enough for me, I don't really need 80MP), while having the focusing system, write speed, ergonomics, ISO of a 1Dx with glass built by Canon (obviously Canon doesn't have lenses that fit medium format, but I would appreciate it if they made a standard set of primes for this fictional system...).
The new Canon lenses would retain Phase's leaf shutter system. Obviously I care more about the picture quality than burst speed. In a fantasy you could have both a leaf shutter AND 12 FPS, but physics won't allow for that. I would be quite content with a much slower burst but with the leaf shutter for strobe syncing. I would love a Canon medium format system... well any medium format system really, but I can't afford $20k into a system right now.
EDIT: Thought of another one. I would love a Fuji X-Series camera with a medium format sensor. Can you imagine? The whole back of the camera would essentially be the sensor. Fuji is also excellent at making glass like Canon, they could easily make lenses for such a system. All while being extremely compact like a rangefinder with no mirror. Of course I think in this case there would be waaaay too many physical limitations, as in, it's unlikely such a thing would be even physically feasible, but it would be cool if it was.
