p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Show jumping with D4/80-400AF-S

As promised in a previous post, a few more pictures.
This time I just took the D4 with the 80-400VR AF-S, no other lens or body to take a few pictures at a show.
I decided to go for a "light" combo, I could have taken the 200-400VR and the 70-200VR on another body, but I wanted flexibility and compactness. I am pretty happy with the results, this was a kind of real life test of the combo.

Almost all shots are fully open, AF Continuous, 3D tracking.

Awesome shots - The 80-400 and the D4 is a sweet combo. I've used the 80-400 on my D800, but the AF just doesn't seem to latch on quite as well as my D4.

Guy, those are really excellent. Except perhaps some superior bokeh from a faster lens, I don't think those could be improved upon in any way.

After realizing I really never cropped my D800 images much more than 50%, I splurged on a D4 today for the speed...look forward to trying out the D4+80-400 AF-S combo myself.

Beautiful set!! #4 stands out to me - really nice.

My only small nit is the breeches in photo #1 look a tad blue-ish purple. Could be my monitor, though.

No One and I mean NO ONE who will be buying these will ever care about Bokeh guys, all these folks will be seeing is the most minute ideas of where they think the horse position is at some precise moment that none of of will ever fully appreciate lol

Excellent work Guy!

+2... Great images Guy Also remember that it was so easy for him to move and zoom in & out to get the best shot. IMO in good light you can't beat the new 80-400.

#6 & #8 stand out for me. I too think the bokeh is missing a bit but then it's a slow lens at 300-400mm. I also don't think US$2,500 is a prosumer lens price

I love mine as a walkaround but decided it's not fast enough for the birding I do. Look forward to trying it out on the D3s I hope to buy tomorrow.

The bokeh is just ok, but the added flexibility of the range and the reasonable weight outweighs the disadvantages.

Thank you. I have used three 80-400 lenses, the Sigma OS version (my previous long zoom): very good IQ and faster AF than the VR; the Nikkor AF-D VR: very good IQ and relatively slow AF, and the new AF-S VRII: excellent IQ, fast AF. The IQ differences are marginal but the AF does make a difference. I have used the 80-400VR next to the 200-400VR for a few assignments and you can't always tell the difference just by looking at the pictures. The 200-400VR delivers better IQ and a kind of 3D effect, but again, it is not always that evident.

Thanks, and the combo is highly recommended. Hand holdable for a long time without any problem.

Hi John, you are right, but a 200-400VR would have delivered slightly better IQ. The other photographers next to me were using better lenses (300 2.8, 400 2.8 et 600 4.0).
Thanks for your comment.

It depends, 5.6 is definitely not 4.0 or even 2.8 but the lens is quite usable for wildlife as well. My favorite is still the 200-400VR by the way.

That's true, but you see them more and more on this side of the ocean. BTW, the guy with the 600mm was a Canadian photographer. There were competitors from many different countries.
