Practice - any thoughts appreciated. I can never decide on contrast and brightness.

Thanks,

Bob

Hey Bob, if the cat's coat is black, I think the brightness here might be a bit high, although, yesterday I looked out the church's door and the blacktop was reflected as a very light gray from the cloud cover thanks to the standing rain. Really wish I'd have had a camera then!

Thanks Douglas,

Kind of feedback I was hoping for.

I didnt have the same initial reaction, perhaps because the head seems appropriately dark.
What kind of lighting is falling along the back and behind the cat?
Contrast looks good to me, natural.

Thanks Scott,

Brilliant sunshine filtered through trees - 11am-ish.

I think the lighter side of her back is reflection of the blues from the sky which I have not been able to totally remove other than by spot-reduction of exposure in raw file....I'll keep at it.

At this point, I am happy with what looks to me as a softer, richer image...

Best,

Bob

First things first, Bob-
An excellent image.
About the contrast/brightness quandary- it'll go on forever .
Some people like to see details everywhere.
Some people like dark negative space.
Then there is the issue of "What color IS the cat?" Which only you know.
Rendering it in B&W makes it even more complicated.
Probably the only issue that everybody agrees on- is when light areas are blown out (which is not the case here).
IMO, that leaves only one valid question: "What does Bob Jarman think is best?"
For my money- the shot as presented has an excellent combination of brightness/contrast.

Thanks Charlie,

Appreciate your thoughtful and helpful comments. Glad you enjoy the image.

Backstory - this particular cat disappeared 3 days beginning of the week. We thought she'd gone somewhere to die or a fox, or coyote, got her. Yes, they have established a presence in Georgia. Discovered she spent the time locked in the upstairs of a neighbor's garage.

Now we can't go outside without her being constantly underfoot and meowing the whole time. Fits the nickname she acquired many years ago: Whinny-assed cat.

Regards,

Bob

Good story about her being locked up.
When I was driving tour buses on the northern section of the Alaska Highway- there was a road stop/store/gas station place that was 75 miles from anywhere else.
They had a friendly cat that always came out to greet customers.
She went missing for a couple days.
Fearing the worst (hungry grizzly, wolves, etc.) the people were surprised and happy when they got a radio call from Whitehorse (about 200 miles down the road). The cat had jumped into the back of a pickup and gone to sleep.
After complicated logistical arrangements were made- they DID get the cat back.
They gave it a colorful nickname upon its return, but since this is a public forum... .
