p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Is anyone considering the new Sigma 24-105 f4?

I just saw some sample images with this lens:

http://www.lenstip.com/2065-news-Sigma_A_24-105_mm_f_4_DG_OS_HSM_-_sample_images.html

and I think Sigma is really trying to be a contender with great glass. I have the 35 1.4 and it's still glued to my D800E since last Christmas. I know this lens could never compare to the 35 1.4, but I'd sure like to read more about it. Also, my copy of the Sigma 85 1.4 is simply amazing.

I never cared for Nikon's 24-120(bought it twice) and somehow hope this may be better. Two big issues that bug me:

1. 82mm filter size? huh?
2. The lens is almost 2 pounds. That's almost the same weight of my 24-70.
3. I also read a quick review of a pre-production model that suffered from lens creep.

It's supposed to hit shelves any day now and I was wondering if I'm the only one tempted.

Thoughts anyone??

I preordered one. While I'm not crazy for these standard zooms, they are a necessity for travel or all around use, and I haven't found the right combination of weight/quality yet, I hope this is it. Never tried the Nikon 24-120 too much money, and I had the 24-85 which was light and quality was ok, but not inspiring. Also tried the Tamron 24-70 VC, but didn't see what all the hype was about, so I will give the Sigma a whirl!

With a weight of nearly 900gms, no thanks.
I prefer the lighter 24-120 f4.

Like you I tried the new 24-120 and on my D800E it was not impressive, so I find myself looking for that bit more range than the 24-70 and this may just be that lens. I do think that the resolution on the 800E may be part of the issue and so I wonder if the Sigma may not be the perfect walk-around lens for "Pure" photography. I can see myself with a base kit of the new DF, the 24-105, the Sigma 35/1.4 and my Zeiss 100/2 while the D800E goes in the landscape kit with the 14-24, 24-70, 70-200 and the 24PC-E.

Peace,

Todd

Waiting for a couple of reviews, but it looks interesting.

I'm pretty satisfied with my 24-120VRII.
Although it's not the best lens I have, it is almost ideal as a travel lens.
Big cons of the Sigma are: too short for my liking, weight and 82mm as all my lenses have 77mm filter thread.
I would rather go for the 24-70/2.8

Planning a trip to Europe and I don't have any wide-normal zoom. Thinking about Nikon 18-35mm G, 24-120mm F4, or this lens if it's not too heavy/big. Is the older 28-105mm AF-D good with D600? Does anyone use that combination?

Want to see some real reviews come out. The sample photos are crap, either bad sample or bad shooting... but no way is that lens going to be that mushy in the center.

24-120 edge performance is really mediocre and really slacks off near the long end, so there certainly is room for improvement.

The 28-105D (I've owned two copies and tried out many more) was just OK at 12MP, so 24MP will surely be disappointing unless you will be printing/viewing small size images. I found it to be a very very versatile lens.

I was hoping that the Sigma would be a great replacement for the 28-105D, but it's larger, heavier, and the MTF data does not look all that promising to me. Plus that filter thread just kills it as the largest filter I have is 77mm and I really don't want to need to buy yet another $100+ filter just for one lens.

Surely Nikon could come out with a new 28-105AFS VR that would be killer, but their recent history with the 24-85AFS and 24-120/4 shows that the either don't want to or are incapable of producing a wide-to-short tele that is very very good across the frame at 16MP let alone 24MP, or 36MP.

Thanks John. Probably I will wait a little bit. I still have time until summer next year or probably grab the now cheap X-E1 and 18-55mm. See what the black Friday will bring to the table.
