What is the difference between the EF-S 18-135mm lenses?
Ultrasonic? STM?

Goal, a lens with more reach than the EF-S 17-85mm IS USM lens on my 50D.
Hopefully a little faster focusing too.

The USM focuses a bit faster. The STM focuses absolutely silently, and is now the new model for use with video in mind. If you never shoot video the USM should be fine, but as soon as you do video you want the STM, as you can clearly hear USM lenses in video. Some people also say that the STM is optically better - I never compared.

I have the STM on my 70D which I bought specifically for video. The 15-85 USM was clearly making noise, so although the 15-85 is optically better I opted for the STM and have no regrets.

What do you mean by "work in video mode"?
All EF/EFS lens work in video mode on the 70D.
Is there a specific feature like AF or IS that you're referring to?

The STM version is a fine lens, the rumor is that it's sharper than the original version.
In my experience the lens isn't super sharp at the long end, just decent. Your 24-105 and 70-200 are sharper at similar focal lengths and apertures.

Hope this helps.

I'm assuming that it's just the original version.

It's the original 18-135 that came out a few years ago.

Yes, on the 7D and 70D and everything in between, any APS-C cropper that supports movie mode. Works even on my SL1

Does the STM lens work with the AF on the 7D in video mode? Is it faster than the non-STM lenses? I understand that the mirror may have to flip-up on the 7D to focus during video, or contrast focus; but will the STM work? work better?

Wasn't there one labelled "ULTRASONIC"? Isn't that the same as USM?

There is an old 28-135 IS USM sold with the 7D- but that's it, Canon never put USM on the 18-135 series.

It'd be the same as a USM lens; STM is a little slower and is focus-by-wire, but it's also quieter. With DPAF-equipped cameras like the 70D, STM lenses may be smoother for video, though most are showing the USM lenses to be fairly competent.

Don't expect any more or less from the 7D when using STM lenses in place of USM lenses. It can focus without flipping the mirror using contrast AF, but it will be an arduous process that you likely won't want to use while recording without cuts to remove the focus hunting.

As others have mentioned-
1. No USM 18-135
2. The newer STM 18-135 is a little better optically and focuses better during video on STM enabled bodies (70D, T4i/T5i, SL1).
3. 7D will autofocus both in video and pictures, it doesn't take advantage of the STM though.

What exactly do you mean of "taking advantage of the STM"? The whole advantage of the STM is that you can't hear the motor while it focuses. As such, any cropper camera that allows AF in movie mode will take advantage of it. If the 7D can focus during video (I don't know as I don't have one), it will take advantage of it as you will not be able to hear the motor there, too.

My understanding is that only some of the newer bodies will continuously autofocus during video. The 7D and 60D do not have this feature but the 70D, SL1, EOS M, and some newer XXXDs do. The advantage of STM is that it is both quiet and slower so that the AF movement is not as noticeable. The DPR SL1 review has a comparison of panning videos done with the 18-55 STM and the 15-85 USM. The 15-85 has annoying AF jumps while the STM lens yields a smooth pan.

When I got my SL1, I opted to keep my 15-85 because it was optically superior to the 18-55 kit. Then I tried a panning video with the 15-85. Now I'm going to re-buy the 18-55 just for videos. At least its cheap and light.

Ya, what I don't get is if you read the 18-55 and 18-135 STM descriptions they tout the fast focusing, but that seems to be the very problem with USM video. So fast compared to what? I don't get it.

I've been fighting video since my 5D2. Been trying to add fast/easy panoramic video clips to my vacation pics for a while now. Beaches with breaking waves are hard to photostitch. It shouldn't be this hard

So are you all saying that USM lens still focuses faster than STM lens (not talking about continuous AF in video mode).
