p.1 #1 · Convert from Nikon - which body?

Hey all. I'm working on slowly converting over to Canon (so the wife and I can share gear, plus I like new-to-me toys), but keep waffling about which body to get. I currently own a D200 that I've used for 6 years and have loved it. The wife has a 50D, but for around $350-ish more I'm seeing used 7Ds out there. I know there was debate between these bodies when the 7D first came out, but wanted to get a more current consensus.

I also know that the savings by getting a 50D could net me a lens, but I think I'm only going with a 3-lens setup for now, which will be as follows (once my Nikon gear sells):

Sigma 10-20 or Canon 10-22
Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 OS (already en-route)
Canon 70-200 f/4 IS

Is the 7D's AF worth the extra coin? The features of it seem more in line with the D200's AF. The video feature is not a must, but could be nice for filming the kids. I don't use flash often at all, but the commander mode on my D200 has been useful on occasion.

What say you, Canon guys in the know?

It is if you plan to do much action photography.

How urgent is the change? Do you have a timeframe?

I was kind of hoping to change over before we go to the Smokies in 3 weeks, but it's not that terribly urgent.

7D is still a very good camera. It's a bit behind on noise performance with crop, but frankly ALL of Canon's sensors are pretty much in the same place when it comes to that.

I'd go 7D over 50D any day.

Another vote for 7D. Previously had 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50D. 7D>>all of those.

I would save even more money and go for a 60D or T4i (T5 is exact same camera). Unless you plan on shooting really fast/erratic objects, the video functionality, swivel screen, touch (T4/5) screen of the aforementioned cameras would be a lot more valuable than a complicated AF system. Plus you save $$$, and they all share the 7D's dated sensor

Get a 70D. At this stage, I see no reason not to get a 70D over the 7D. AF is excellent, noise characteristics are better.

I'd recommend a 6D over any crop body. If you must have a crop camera because of your lenses, then the 70D is the best choice currently.

FYI, if you missed the other thread, B&H has refurbished 7D for just over 900 dollars.

70D is the way to go. Failing that, the 60D, and after that T4i, after that 7D.

Thanks for the opinions so far, guys. The 6D is nice, but out of my budget, plus I prefer the "reach" of croppers and faster fps (for kids and occasional BIFs). The 70D looks pretty good and might be a possibility depending on how my Nikon gear sells, but may preclude getting a UWA for a while, which I guess isn't that big a deal.
