I currently have 2 7D gripped. I shoot half wedding and paid work, and half wildlife. I am thinking of skipping 5 D mark III and going straight to the top. 5DMKIII would be perfect for weddings, but leaving me wanting more out of my 7D for wildlife.

I have a 500mm F4, 100-400, and a 70-200 as my main wildlife lens.

OK,, go,, let the voting and debate begin.

Thanks in advance!

I own 1DX, 5D3 and 7D. Of those 3, the 1DX is top, my second choice would be the 5D3. I basically can't stand my 7D anymore so I won't even go there. Personally, I don't get any extra reach from that lousy crop sensor in the 7D. YMMV. That said, the 7D is excellent in good light and shooting at close distance. In the Galapagos it works amazingly. Once the light dies and the distance increases, the other cameras are better IMO.

My one other camera is the 1D4 and it in some ways could be considered the top dog. I'm sure some will reply and name it the best. I personally still prefer the 1DX and the 5D3 over the 1D4. For birds in flight I will choose the 1DX or 1D4 but if I was shooting perched birds or larger game, I will often prefer the 5D3.

I choose Mark IV over 5 DIII last January. Very Solid camera...should be in the mix before 7d.

My shooting buddy uses 5d3 and i can attest that Its a potent machine and would probably benefit your wedding work. Images are way cleaner than 1DIV, But he complains about reach with his 500. He does get a lot of award winners with it.

I'd go 1div unless there is a 6 or 8 in your future.

This is not an easy question.

The best wildlife camera is 1dx but:
The best reach camera/iso camera for wildlife is the 1div
The best all round camera is the 5diii - pretty good at wildlife, excellent for landscape but a little reach limited.

But I chose i5diii and 7d combination because they share the same battery and are easier to carry and I don't want an inferior landscape camera (1dx) that does not share batteries. But I am hoping for a 7dii soon or I will start shopping for a used 1div.

for me, when it comes to wildlife, I need all the pixel density I can get along with a reliable AF system. Right now, 1div fits that bill perfectly.

I've had good results from a 40D, 1DMKIII and a 1DX. A lot depends
on the situation, light, action, etc. Honestly, if you lined up well taken shots
from all the listed cameras on this post you would be hard pressed to tell what camera took what shot.

It's a combination of photographer, camera and post processing.

IMO, it depends on the type of wildlife and the limitations of your lenses. For example, if you're focal limited to 500mm and want to capture songbirds in decent light, the 7D (or newer 70D) is (are) best--not even close. Pixel density makes it so. In many other conditions, e.g., longer lenses, bigger wildlife, BIF, or in lower light shooting, the 1DX, 1DMKIV, and 5DMKIII are better choices, each having a slight edge depending on the particular circumstances. Obviously (I think), the 1DX is the king in the overall sense.

Oh, I hope I haven't stepped in it.

I leaning towards the 1DX, but I am going to rent one for a 3 day weekend of eagles before pulling the trigger.

Ease into it.

THANKS for tall the suggestions and insight.

iHowdy,

If the money is burning a hole in your pocket, you will be more that satisfied with Canon's 1DX. The 5D Mrk III has the same focusing system as the 1DX, but for nature, I'd go for the 1DX. I have the Mark IV and it's a great camera, but I am going to wait to see what the replacement will be for the 1DX, because I think that Canon has to step-up and compete with Nikon's D800 which has 36MP and Nikon's D4.

Let me know what you do.

Larry

Hi Kent,

The 1DX is the best camera to date for wildlife IMO, assuming you have the right lenses. 1D4 is 2nd best buy but you have to search to find a good one used.

If you want a comparison of 1D4 and 1DX for wildlife subjects checkout the review on my blog

good luck with your choice,
