I know it's a bit OT- but is there any reason other than the more pedestrian AF sensor that you wouldn't expect similar results using the 85L (II) with the 6D as you saw on your 1Ds III and friend's 5D III? Thanks!

The 6D AF is exactly the same as the 5D and 5DII, not up to the task, when compared to the 1D.

Right, so I'll have to try it and see. I wonder if any of the shops around town actually carry the 85L II; it's a pretty rare lens. Will have to look around.

Well here's a win-win situation (IMO). Keep the 70-200 II and get the superb Sigma 85 f/1.4. It's so much cheaper than the Canon, has much better AF speed, is smaller and lighter, is sharp wide open, has lovely bokeh. You get to keep the wonderful zoom and get a lens that is 95-98% as good as the 85L.

T minus 10, 9, 8 .....,2, 1, zero

Ok launch the Sigma hate posts now!.

Definitely worth a test drive. I rarely think Sigma, but I know the 35 is very good.

Without saying anything negative about the Sigma, you can say, as already mentioned in the thread, that the 85/1.8 is even cheaper, has much better AF speed, is smaller and lighter, is nearly as sharp across the aperture range and is more consistently sharp across the frame, has excellent bokeh, and has the best LoCA control of the AF 85's on Canon, wide open and stopped down.

How's that?

The fact is, the 85L is sexy.

The 85 1.8 is a lens

For weddings, I use 35l and 85l for 90% of the day. I do have wider and longer, however, often those lenses stay in the bag.

I own the 70-200 f2.8 II, the 85 f1.2 II and the 85 f1.8. Honestly, I cannot see shooting a wedding with the 1.2, its focusing is way to slow. I CAN see using it for portraits or more controlled shots at a wedding but if you plan on using it for capturing people moving around and such, I would suggest the 1.8 or better yet, the zoom. The 1.2 is a great lens, don't get me wrong. But it shines instead as a portrait lens wide open (or close to it) or as a short tele landscape lens.

The 1.8 is not sexy but it's a better performer than the 1.2. It's also sharper, faster focusing, and will give you more keepers. It however will not give you a tingle in your crotch.

I dumped my 85 1.2 II this year and went back to the 85 1.8. It was great for portraits but it was simply too slow of focusing for wedding activity, and if shooting wide open that narrow DOP can be dangerous when it can't keep up. I was told at a recent wedding however to "pick a spot in the back and don't move", so I was glad for my 70-200 (which I don't use very often either).

I dunno about that. I have some 85 f1.8 images on flickr that are very popular.

My usage of my 70-200 II went way down after acquiring the 85 L II; however, I am very reluctant to sell the 70-200 because there are times that the extra reach is needed (even during a wedding ceremony). I think these two lenses are more complimentary to each other than a replacement.

If you want to go all primes, maybe swap the 70-200 for an 85 L and 135 L; however, I think the 70-200 is way to versatile to part with.

Here's another thought, do what I did: Opt for the 70-200 f/4 IS and the 85L. The 85LII is a lens I've thought about selling for the past 2-3 years just because it's such an expensive lens and my clients will never know the difference. But then I create an image with it that is just draw dropping. It's not a perfect lens, 85L's (even the mark II) suffer chromatic aberrations wide open in harsh light that the modern zooms don't. But that's only in rare lighting instances where you get direct sunlight hitting from behind your subject. But the plusses do outweigh the minusses. I also thought about selling my 85LII and getting the 85 1.8. A friend of mine did this and regretted it. Especially since going from the 1.8 to the 1.2LII is not as $easy$ as the other way around. As for the 70-200 f/4 IS, I've never used a 70-200 as much as this lens. It's optically amazing and very light weight. The 2.8 IS's are great but my body has a great dislike for heavy lenses.

For wedding the 2.8 lens will gather twice the light and it will activate all the cross focus points.

Those cross focus points are nice to have in a dark reception hall.

The 70-200L IS 2.8 is an excellent second shooter lens.

BTW - 3 stop ND for outside work.

Only shot I had handy - 1DsIII - 85L - F1.2
