p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Trade my 70-200 f/2.8 II for an 85 f/1.2?

I just shot a wedding and 97% of the time I used my 35 f/ 1.4. My 70-200 f/ 2.8 II stayed in the bag the whole time. I always fear not being able to 'reach' my clients during the ceremony, but that's 15-20 minutes of my entire day. I'd much rather have the 85 for portraits and low light performance. Would I regret unloading that 86-200 mm reach? Thanks everyone!

You will hear this statement often - those are two different lenses for (almost) two different situations. And I tend to agree with that. Add and not replace, I would say . BTW, are you using a single body for shooting weddings?

It sounds like you know best, what you actually need. I have both the 70-200/2.8L IS II and 85/1.2L II, but I sold my 35/1.4L earlier this year. Go figure.

I say, go for it. The only way that you can tell if you'll miss the extra reach of the zoom is to try it and see...

If you don't use it, then I don't see an issue with trying something that you might use more often.

Do you find that the focal length of your 35mm is the reason you use it most, or are there other reasons, like the shallow DOF or smooth bokeh?

I think that most of my favorite shots that I've seen from wedding photogs typically are from one of the fast Canon primes. I think it's because sharpness isn't the most important aspect of that type of photography.

You also might want to post in the wedding forum. They might have more insight on this switch.

I have owned all four 70-200L and never used any of them enough.

The 35L and 85L are the only two I would need for a wedding.

They should both be mounted on separate FF bodies.

The 85 will not give you the AF snap speed and IS of the 70-200, and if you are shooting under f/2.8 with the 85 you will run increasingly into the narrow DOF, so I wouldn't be to swift in discarding the 70-200. I would add the 85 as a luxury for when you can afford it, but keep the 70-200, it's a great lens.

I was damn glad of my 80-200 (drainpipe!) last weekend when I couldnt get any closer than about 10 yards from the B&G... Other than that it's the 24-70ii for most of the day, then sigma 35 and 85 combo for the evening.

I've just ordered a mark 2. Now I've got to earn enough to pay for it!

Depending upon how you shoot, the AF speed might not be an issue. Most weddings don't require blazing fast AF, but I've only shot the 85L once, so I don't have the experience to comment on that specific lens.
But in regards to the OP, he doesn't even use the 70-200 so he won't be missing the "AF snap" anyway.

OP's profile shows 5DIII. I expect that'll drive AF for the 85/1.2L pretty OK.

...I've just found that my 85L 1.2 I focuses at glacier speed and at events, especially lower light, I'm prone to misses due to AF speed and DOF, so while the hits are rewarding, I get more done with the 70-200. I don't shoot weddings, so maybe that's different.

Agreed, also 85L is heavy (keg) but not as heavy as the 70-200 II

I am glad you asked I did in fact purchase my 1DsIII to drive the 85L, and I have tested the lens on my friends 5DIII.

I found it locks into focus in the same deliberate manner.

I never found my 5D satisfactory and I would not expect spectacular results on the 6D.

The weight was not my issue, I wanted the background separation without the compression.

Why not get the bang for your buck 85 1.8 and try that out for a while? If it's in stock you can get a refurb one from Canon with 20% off right now. You could easily sell it later and at least break even. If you really like the FL and the perks of the 85L then you can upgrade then.

On a nother note I never used a 85L before, but the 85 1.8 AF is pretty fast and from what I read the 85L is slower and heavier so keep that in mind if you do make that decision. I used my 85 1.8 mostly shot at f/2-2.2 at a wedding on my 5D3 and keeper (in terms of focus) rates were over 95%. This is when toggling AI Servo with One Shot, even with outer focus points. Albiet light was pretty good and when it wasn't AF assist beam was used for the most part.

I know it's a bit OT- but is there any reason other than the more pedestrian AF sensor that you wouldn't expect similar results using the 85L (II) with the 6D as you saw on your 1Ds III and friend's 5D III? Thanks!
