p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Barn Wedding with Difficult Lighting (18 images)

On Friday night I did a barn wedding for a couple that booked me last minute. The lighting was really difficult, because I wanted to light the couple, yet keep the ambience of the setting. I'm pleased with how the ceremony photos came out.

This is a very bride and groom centric post. It was a small wedding (35 people) and they didn't want pictures of the guests posted on my blog. They felt that those not invited would be upset after seeing who was there.

Here are a few from the wedding. C+C are welcomed...

I'm curious as to why you wouldn't want to gel the flash to match the ambient color temp if you wanted to keep the ambience of the setting?

Good question. I didn't try that. Usually I don't like the looks of Tungsten gels in tungsten light. I makes everything too cool for my taste, but it might have looked nice here

You did a great job with the venue. On first gIance with #5, I actually thought the light on the b&g was from the window...

First thing I spotted as well. I almost always gel my flashes in those types of lighting situations because to my eyes, the flash looks MUCH more natural and non-flash like when it more closely matches the ambient. In this situation, I would not say the non-gel light looks bad, though...if anything it might even give it a nice feel because it causes the ambient to be even warmer.

Great job Mike. I'm digging those B&G sun shots. Overall I think the lighting looks very nice.

I like the mixed light as well. Perhaps a 1/4 CTO would be more of a subtle mix, but sometimes it's better not to "neutralize" all the color and preserve the feeling of a place. Good stuff.

Love 5. And the split color doesn't bother me in this photo. It allows them to be neutral while allowing for that gold moody color in the ambient. . I never actually considered OCF for a ceremony. Might need to keep it in mind for the right scenario.

Thanks! I hardly ever use OCF for a ceremony, but I'm not sure this could have been done well without it. Thankfully they had a loft where I could put my flashes up and out of the way.

I think these are beautiful: elegant and atmospheric. Especially if it was "difficult light" - you make it look effortless. I think the one with mixed lighting would have worked either way and is more of a choice than a problem per se; the contrasting light temp as shot makes them "pop" a little more than gelling might have, and I like it.

A set like this shows me how very, very, very much I have yet to learn about turning lemons into lemonade...................

Very nice set; agree that the mixed lighting helps draw the eye to the B&G - it works for me

Just a slight nit on the pose in 14 - with his hand in his pocket it looks like he's 'not that into it', did you try another one with his hand on her waist?

I thought the same thing when looking at it. I don't have any of that particular pose with his hand on her waist, but the light was too good not to post it

Looks great Mike--especially if the lighting was difficult, it wasn't super obvious. I like 15 but I can't decide if I'd like it more if the bride wasn't looking at the camera. It's so rare that we get the guys to look that emotional and I feel like it may have been more of an intimate moment if she was looking off camera or had her eyes closed.

Nice job, overall.

Putting a CTO over the flash heads does not mean that the color has to be neutralized but rather the color temps (tungsten lighting in the hanging lanterns and the flash heads) of all sources will be closer to the same color temp. Then you can either keep the temp warm or neutralize it.

Yeah I would have put gels on the falsh heads so that all the light sources would have been lcoser to the same color temp. Right now it looks pretty strange that the B&G have the really cool lolor temp light on them and then the rest of the room is really warm. It makes your off camera lighting look even more like it was added.
