I'm 4000 miles from home and my 5d2 is giving me an error message "clean contacts ..."only using the24-105.
They look OK. I've been using this lense &body for years
Anyone had this problem? Any suggestions ?
I am in Wales.

Use a pink eraser to clean the contacts of the lens and camera. Brush any debris away and give it another try.

You might also remove the lens, turn the camera off, remove the battery(ies), let it sit a bit, then replace the battery(ies), then mount the lens and turn the camera on. Might clear the fault if it was an electronic glitz, if not maybe there really is a dirty contact.

Depending on the age and use of the lens it may be a cable that is frayed when you zoom. If you are getting the Er 01 code that is what I got and now my lens is completely worthless unless I keep it at 24mm. I am preparing to send it in to Canon when I get around to it and I've read the repair is $200-$300. I've also read this is a known design flaw and Canon is not owning up to it. Hope your lens fairs better than mine or the many others I have read about.

I had this problem several months ago. I tried everything -- removing battery, taking of lens and remounting,... I finally sent it to canon repair: $240.

Interesting, I had the PS go out on my 5Dc...repair bill $240, That was a month ago and they still have my camera. Found out that they had to order the PS from Japan.

I've cleaned the contacts with a pencil eraser and it has been better. I have gotten the error message again when the lens was at around 35mm.
Hopefully I'll be able to use it during the rest of my trip. Off to Athens tomorrow. Fortunately I have my 16-35 with me as we'll.

Update. I'm in Athens, and taken a few shots with the 24-105. Started getting the error message again. (On both my 5D2 and 1D4)
Too bad because this would be my most used lens. I'll probably mount the 16-35 on my crop body and my 70-200 on the full frame.
I guess the 24-105 gets sent in to Canon when I get home in two weeks.
Thanks for your input.

Could well be the aperture sticking due to wear on the ribbon cable. It happened to mine, and was only good at 24 mm and would lock the 60D up at other focal lengths.

Lense creep is irratating for a walk-around lense as good as this one for FF. My only option is my 17-40 on a crop body.

I just got home this evening. I have a new appreciation for the focal length of this lens.
Off to Canon in the next day or two.
