To be honest, everything is Australia was already covered by a statutory implied warranty. In Australia, manufacturers do not get to set the warranty period, it is set by community expectation. If you spend thousands of dollars on camera gear you always had at least 2 years warranty here - probably 3 or more. It's the same with many other consumer goods. I once returned an iMac after 20 months and they insisted I had to pay because I didn't have Applecare. I summoned a manager and, once he realised I knew the law, he immediately agreed to fix it without charge. My brother did the same thing with a 3-year old Sony flatscreen TV.
Canon aren't giving us anything we didn't already have, they've just decided to stop trying to con us and Marketing are hoping they can spin it as a positive gesture.
