I think I was a little too close...Just using an 85mm

Any thoughts, critiques?

Definitely too close if that was an 85 mm!!
could benefit from opening up the shadows a bit more
Position in the frame is a challenge. Assuming you dont have more on the right, the question is where to crop to have less of the buffalo. The bit of rump and hind leg feel odd. Possibly a portrait orientation of head and the front legs? Or a crop in front of the hind leg and half or more of the open space on the left cropped out?
No easy answer to my eye.

I agree with Scott. The way it's cropped (or is this as shot?) as-is looks awkward and you're losing a lot of wonderful detail in the shadows.

Sometimes it is better to illustrate your posing instructions to your subject than trying to verbally explain it to them. Did you get on your hands & knees to show him how you wanted the pose.

+1 @ shadow detail and crop challenges.

I'm in far too bright light atm to see my display well, but here's a quick stab at it ... which, btw, you're lucky he didn't do the same toward you.

Wow, thanks guys. That was as shot, no cropping, but I love the crop that Kent did. I agree with everything said. And the re composition made a world of difference.

In the future I'll make sure and crop before posting.

And yeah, I had a huge rock with a hole in it that I planned to beat feet to if he came at me!

Thanks guys.

Scott brought the challenges of the crop to our attention, so I tried to think atypical @ he was just starting to turn around in the frame ... serving as the basis for the amount of negative space on the left to allow him room to make the turn.
