I appreciate all the feedback. From the sounds of it, its a toss-up between 1 & 3 with 4 hanging on but not the overall favorite. Im going to make a test print of all four and see if that helps in my decision process.

#1 is definitely dramatic but I go with #3 for the classic expression on his face, the wonderful composition, the relaxed appearance of his body (no he's not slumped) and both his hand holding the glasses and the right hand (he doesn't appear to be pointing at a watch). I would vignette pretty heavy under him and behind him and the upper left corner. Beautiful series. Very well done.

I'm going with #4, for all the reasons Ravitej mentioned

#1 doesn't say enough about his work

I do like #2, but you'd need to print it big

I really like #1. I would drop the exposure on his face a tiny bit. Otherwise it's great.

1 is awesome. Perfectly lit beautiful image. I like 2 for it's illustrative storytelling.

I think it would be awesome for us photographers if this took off as a new trend. Retirement portraits seem like a great gift most people would appreciate...

My thoughts exactly. This will be the first retirement portrait but we are hoping it will take off with this. After making test prints I decided to go with #2. I agree that the image tells more of a story.

#3 for me, but a very nice set overall. He will be pleased with whichever one you choose.

People are all over the place on which shot is their favorite. This means on thing: all are great shots. I like all of them, but prefer 4.

My opinion is 4 captures the subject best. Expression is joyous like he enjoyed his work. Looks like he is talking to his fellow mechanics, drivers or other staff. He is holding a tool. And behind him is that giant tool case. It talks of tools and a lifetime trade. He doesn't need to have a lot of bus in the frame. just enough so that visitors to the home know what it is. And he can tell a story of all those tools. That's a big tool box. His name and UTA is clear and readable. He is relaxed.

+100 Ravitej, you said it so succinctly - I could have never explained it this well

I am for #4 as well.

#1 says nothing of what he does; it's also overexposed.

#3 is the most dynamic and best of the bunch, but if it's going to be printed, framed, and delivered as a gift, his expression's a little too serious for that.

If only he had #4's smile in #3. #4 still doesn't say anything of what he does.

#2, though too posed, is probably a great combination of "environment" and "who he is."

Great looking pics overall.

My two cents - I would crop #2 in a little and use it. He looks the most confident and less tired I believe. BTW, all-in-all, they are great environmental portraits.

Always start with the eyes. Then posture and expression. The rest is just support.

I prefer #4 because he has a bit of a smile.
But I do like them all.
You've chosen to have soft-focus on all these images- and it's of course your decision.
But I ask myself why? And I have no plausible answer.
I sharpened one of the shots- and liked it a whole lot better.
