Thanks much, guys.
A couple points of clarification:
Even back then, Bangkok was very much becoming an international city, so the woman's dress was fine with the local culture- if not with their old and very conservative traditions.
One of the biggest faux pas a westerner could do was to wear shorts (especially women), and ESPECIALLY to wear them in a religious temple. (Recreational and resort areas excepted.)
About thievery in Thailand: In five trips there I never had a problem- nor did I hear about one. In the two tours I led there, nobody ever had a problem with any kind of thievery.
I've traveled in more than fifty countries, and the only thievery I've been aware of was committed by thugs and professional thieves- pretty much the same as in the US. Or Europe. Or....(pick a country).
The local people of all the countries where I've traveled are honest to the core.
I also must admit that professional thieves occur in larger numbers where there are the greatest numbers of easy "targets." That would include the major tourist cities of the world: Rome, Paris, London, New York City, etc.
Normal caution has worked for me, although I've had cars burgled in Yugoslavia, Italy and Paris.
Small laundry bags containing soiled underwear were about the only things taken (plus an umbrella that I forgot to take into the hostel one night- in Rome).
