Based on experience, I would suggest that you could use f11 (allows for some subject movement of camera movement perpendicular to the focal plane) and a much slower shutter speed.

Thanks, will give that a try. From results DOF would help and a little fill which I have yet to try. Of course I would think more stability with use of tripod would not hurt.

Great, if you can get the insect in focus. Hand-held is mostly more practical. 1/250 sec should freeze most movement.
