While I've seen some slight improvement recently, overall the USPS package track site is a poor piece of work particularly compared to UPS and FedEx.

from what I remember I have only been able to show a package had arrived.
However, I bought a phone from a friend and he tracked it yesterday and said it should arrive today, and it did
but that was only a 45 mile trip. Good Luck.

Most of the time, in my case at-least, the tracking is OK. My perception is that it is updated only once a day and hence not very useful if you want up-to-date information. As Henry mentioned, UPS and FedEx tracking is much superior.

Have to agree with Henry. Recently I sent a Priority Mail package to Missouri and I was shocked to see every PO it went through was reported. Here are the emails received:

They are not up to par with FedEx or UPS. Previously they used to update their systems only once a day because the carrier had to get back to the office, and put the scanner on a cradle to update. But now they update more frequently because they have better technology now.

All the time. And when it arrives in country I change to the local system and it tracks without fault.

I must say there are a few advantages to USPS shipping:
They ship to PO box addresses.
They deliver Saturday at no extra charge.
Picking up a package they couldn't deliver is usually simpler and more local.

Just last week I was able too. It originally state that a package would arrive on Tuesday, but looking at it Monday I noticed it wouldn't make it as it was on the coast almost still. And by truck would take more than a day to drive it to the next sorting station then another day from there to here. I checked again on Tuesday sure enough it was still in transit. So on Wednesday morning to late Tyesday I signed up for the email alerts. Wednesday morning I receive an alert that it made it to the sorting station some time after midnight and it was on its way to my post office. Later I received that it was out for delivery and I went to the PO to pick it up. But before this I haven't had much luck.

U guys have to remember, delivery confirmation and tracking are two different things. You have to pay extra for tracking.

Not true, in fact almost all of their package products now includes tracking in the price of the postage.

my recent experience is that USPS has upped their game. Tracking has been timely, specific as to location and progress, and the last item I bought showed up early. Can't beat that for $15. But, ya know what they say about a car engine? It runs the strongest and smoothest just before it blows

It has been better lately. USPS is still the cheapest way to ship most stuff in my experience - priority mail is typically 2-3 days to most destinations, Saturday delivery adds a little value to that, and tracking has been improving.

The tracking will still sometimes lag - it seems like it's not totally consistent everywhere in the country. Most packages I ship now will show every stop, updated pretty quickly. Every once in a while, a package will show up delivered and the tracking will still be behind, though.

My biggest complaint about USPS is that my local delivery people and office are totally $%#&ing incompetent. We recently had a package go missing (shown as delivered in tracking), and I had to harass them for nearly 2 full weeks before someone found it and delivered it. Couldn't get people to call me back or give me an update. It's not the first time a package has been lost or delayed with them.

It's completely true. Don't believe me, go to your local USPS and ask.

I'm seeing failry good tracking on a USPS package this week. It has more detail than I remember. It's not FedEx though.

This has been my experience as well when I'm sending the package, when I'm on the receiving end it can be hit or miss, though mostly it works pretty well in my neck of the woods. I believe certain areas just flat out drop the ball.
Saturday delivery is a big plus too however, all that said YMMV.
