http://www.sonyalpharumors.com/zeiss-will-launch-manual-focusing-lenses-for-the-a7-a7r/

From Zeiss' Facebook page:
We are currently working on manual focus lenses for these new full-frame CSCs. They will have an interface to provide EXIF data to the camera. They are expected to be in stores by the end of 2014. However, we cannot provide any additional infos right now.

Too bad they aren't available at the launch of the A7(r), they could have been a very popular combo.

To me, this indicates that Zeiss knows that the existing ZM-line doesn´t work too well with the A7, so it is not just a question of changing the mounts ot the existing lenses, new optical solution must be found. Still it is good news, I sure would like some small Zeiss manual focus lenses for the A7r.

My biggest question is: are these lenses going to be like the Touit or like the Otus lenses?
ie. good or no cost spared?

I really hope they have an aperture ring.

I guess size would be the only advantage that would sway me from not getting af or oss.

Me too. I am an old time shooter by today's standards and am more comfortable in many ways with MF and I like the aperture rings and the DOF markings on the lens barrels.

I wonder if they still come up with the promised "fast ZM lens". Its now more than a year ago....
Still hoping for the 35/1.4 ZM

This is very good news. My guess is that they will be like the Z* lenses and specifically the ZE lenses (no aperture ring and camera controlled aperture), but I do hope I am wrong and they have an aperture ring. I think they won't be like the Otus lenses because from the size of the 55 it looks like they are going to be very large. Instead I would hope they make them small and focus on f/2 aperture lenses, although eventually some faster a bit bigger and some slower really small lenses would be great too. With these lenses the Sony E mount full frame should be a great competitor for Leica.

That's the key to success of these lenses, at least in my view.

With an incalculable number of tiny M-mount lenses out there, that can be used on E or Fuji X with an inexpensive adapter, why would any reasonable sort buy a bunch of MF 'E' mount lenses, unless they offer something unobtainable, like APO correction or FLs not seen in M lenses All for EXIF data?

Silly.

No color shifts or smeared corners?

I was thinking the same, but I guess the ZM is too advanced in the production stage to be cancelled. It is rumored for the end of this year.

I wish that Zeiss would make the lens line AF instead of MF as this is where the market interest is. I'm not sure how good is MF on the A7 but surely the AF is faster and maybe more accurate in some cases, especially with eye detection.

They would really compete strongly with Leica. I can't help but compare the A7 to the Contax G that took the fight to Leica M7 with AF Zeiss G lenses.

Reportedly, this new sensor has a micro lens array that negates the pesky attributes of the NEX series. It does seem that Sony is aiming, at least with the 36MP version A7, for the Alt market.

That seems the most logical thing to do. Unless Zeiss is looking to find a new life for the rumored-to-be soon defunct ZM line

But cheaper than a 400/2.8, and way smaller. And presumably cheaper than a 200-400/4 as well.
