p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Birding in December in Maine??? or Nova Scotia???

Worth the trip? Looking for ideas and places.
Or should I just go to either for landscape shots that time of the year? I am not looking for eagles or puffins- I figure they are probably gone by then but I would mind some other unusual birds besides warblers, sparrows, etc.

I heard that Big Bird will be in town...

More seriously will likely be some nice shore birds, herons...

herons in December in Maine or Nova Scotia? Not likely!

You might see some purple sandpipers and some wintering ducks. December is not what i'd call a prime time for birds in the Maritimes. i'd be heading about 2000 kms south.

Go to Nova Scotia. You'll get lots of rugged landscape photos there.

The birds have headed 2000 km south, and you should too. You could shoot juncos, I guess!.

I have seen herons in Maine in the winter.

See this link :

http://web4.audubon.org/bird/BOA/F38_G1g.html

"During the coldest part of winter the Blue Heron is observed in the State of Massachusetts and in Maine, spending its time in search of prey about the warm springs and ponds which occur there in certain districts."

I'm going to side with Nova Scotia for two reasons.

I spent most late Summers/ early Fall there as a kid, and even if the birding is a little slow, if you're into maritime themes, landscapes, rocks.. it's the place to be.

You're American, and presently albeit small, you have a few cent exchange on the dollar. Although our gas is right through the friggin roof here.

'you have seen herons in Maine in winter' doesn't mean it's great to shoot herons in Maine in winter months.

Ha, point well taken

What if I had some heron buddies I could call ahead of time to make sure they're around for a shoot ?

Well, having lived the vast majority of my life in Maine, and having lived a fair portion along the coast, I can tell you that December is NOT a good time for birds.

Exceptions: Cardinals & Chickadees But then you have to know where they are.

But, then again, I'm no birding expert

Cheers,
Andre

That's because all your oil is going to be shipped through the US then from Louisiana and the gulf full of oil wells, overseas. That's even less sensible than pay toilets in the diarrhea ward! I wonder who the billionaire brothers are that will profit from this one?

It's so cold in the NE in December, I'm surprised we don't have penguins walking around.

46 year resident of Blue Hill, Maine here...about ten miles south of Acadia National Park...on the coast. Listen to Andre. Your going to see Nut Hatches, Chickadees, Juncos and a few sparrows. Plenty of waterfowl if you can get close enough. Some of the eagles winter over and you can get some good images of them picking up scraps left on the frozen lakes by ice fishermen!
