I know this is elementary but I want to know what the advantage will be if I upgrade from a D300 to a D7100? Will the pictures be twice as clear- or will the colors jump off the page? Will I or would you be able to tell the difference?

Sorry this is so elementary but I really don't know.

I was using a D300, now use a D7100. All in all the change was positive. Biggest difference is I only went to ISO 800 with the D300, but can easily do ISO 2000 on the D7100. The D7100 lets me crop a lot more when needed.

The advantages are none if the MP count of your current camera enables you to print sharp, detailed photos at the size you want. The D7100 will do better at high ISO, but apart from that, the D300 is mostly a better camera.

As for cropping, I take my time and try to frame each photo the way I want it on site. If I can't, there's always the Nokia Lumia that takes 36MP general view photos with its 28mm eqv. lens and fits in a pocket... yeah, I'm joking, but I'm still serious

Why sit in front of a computer screen cropping when I can be out in (more or less) fresh air taking photos?

You may have noticed that when you view your images at 100% (looking at individual pixels) and then reduce the magnification (I.e. from 1:1 to 1:2), that the image appears sharper and more "natural" as digital artifacts disappear. This happens when you "down sample" an image: multiple pixels are combined into one, and small errors, i.e. caused by the image sensor are evened out. The same thing happens when you go from a 12MP sensor to a 24MP one. Even if you don't need all the native pixels, you end up with a better and more faithful image.

As Thorsten said ... downsampling to get clearer, sharper, noiseless shots. Also if you shoot birds .... CROPABILITY !!

With good technique:
Details
The ability to print big with detail
The ability to crop and retain detail

Get it right and I will take a large file over a small file all day long!

I moved from the D300 to the D800 and noticed an obvious level of detail, but had to change my post processing to accommodate that the colors are closer to my end goal than the D300 was.

I also noticed a positive improvement in my dynamic range.

The D7100 should have similar advantages.
