The 58/1.4G is Nikon's "real" f/1.4 prime in the middle focal length. It is just like the 24/1.4 and the 85/1.4. The 50/1.4G was /not/ that lens.

It's priced on a par with the other f/1.4 primes, which likely reflects upgraded construction materials and critical tolerances, the two aspherical elements including the front element, and the nanocoating. It is quite a trick to make these. The Noct was always a very expensive lens.

I believe it is a 58mm design due to a design optimum for the modified gauss design. In other words, it is optimal at 58mm specifically--no more, no less. In other other words, it's a good design for a 58mm lens, which coincidentally affords a reasonable "normal" lens.

If Sigma can make a 1.8 zoom, I'm sure they can make a 50 1.2. Do it Sigma, and show Nikon how you roll.

This makes me laugh. Canon can barely get its 50 1.2 to focus accurately on its own native systems. The thought of Sigma making a solid functioning 50 1.2 is hilarious since not even their 35 is as consistent as canons own - even if it is slightly sharper when it actually gets it right (which, granted, is a larger amount of the time than their 50 1.4 and 85 1.4).

Isn't the problem with the Canon 50/1.2 focus shift related? With SIgma's fancy USB programmer thingy one would think you might be able to dial in a focus shift curve should SIgma pursue a similar designed lens with similar inherit challenges.

Here's a full size night shot sample. My Sigma 35 art looks better wide open, but perhaps this one has camera shake? not sure ...

The belly-aching on my part is that I've been waiting for a lens like this for years but was expecting a 50mm price. 50mm is just too short, but 58mm is just right.

Who knows, if I get a good bonus I spring for this lens.

I agree, performance costs $, but it seems like a lot of Nikon the new stuff is over-priced for what it is.

If photography is too expensive (pro equipment has never been cheap...ever) you might want to try fishing.....

Thanks, I'll consider that. In mean time, my $110 50 f/1.8 works just fine and get me 99% of what the new lens will give me at 1/17th the cost

Sharper ... wide open in the center at least ...

coma is another topic... this new 58 from Nikon handles it well just like the old Noct!

No coma? Not sure what they are looking at. There's coma galore in the corners. For me this lens would be unusable for night shooting (making prints). I'm glad too because that pricetag is ridiculous. I was expecting Noct-like performance at that price point, now I'm no expert lens critic but doesn't apper to even be close.

+1 and Amen to my 50 1.8G...and as far as fishing goes, think again, my boat and 30 rods + tackle cost, well, let's just say my biggest fear in life is when I die my wife will sell my fishing equipment for what I said I paid for it

The definition of a boat...."A hole in the water that you throw money into"...but I do love fishing..

I've seen some very good aftermarket lenses. They all work pretty good when new. But the only aftermarket lens I ever owned is the only lens that failed me on a shoot. I only had it 3 months.

I never got the point of buying fishing equipment ... I just looked at the price of a boat ... then a canoe ... and then went back to my photography web site.

I used to fish when I was younger (a kid) but never was good at it ... but for some reason, same pond, I had great luck ice fishing. Not sure why the difference in luck,

Camera shake? Sounds like VR might have helped in this instance. Too bad.

Funny.

I don't think the optical issue in that photo is camera shake, though. Here are crops from the photo referenced...

I would be interested to see the lens just slightly stopped down. This all might go away and it could be super-stellar. I will be more interested to see samples from the capable hands of the Fred Miranda shooters.
