One good lens? lol.
120-300, 85, 35, 150, 105, 18-35 f/1.8. Not to mention the entire line up coming out soon.

Hell, if it's on par with the 28/1.8 I'd pick it up.

Sigma may make this they may make that. Bottom line is they made one good lens and now people are hinging purchases on fantasy lenses that don't even exist yet. If Sigma made a 50 as nice as their 35, I'd surely grab it and love it, but sitting around and waiting for it is like those pesky D400 guys....

Damn, I so loved using the 58mm Rokkor on my Canon, this focal length is definitely my preference -- but there is no way I could justify $1700. At that price (albeit with no AF) there are quite a few alternatives.

Is this lens weather-sealed? It better be considering its price!

Jason_Brook wrote...Maybe you could answer what I asked in the other thread. What is the significance of 58mm? Not so much as the actual focal length, but as the named focal length.

I am not sure wheter I understand the question correct.

A normal lens is defined as focal lenght = sensor diagonal. This would be 43mm for 24x36mm cameras.
So the "normal" 50mm is a long normal lens, and a 58mm lens is a even longer normal lens.
I donīt use it as a short medium tele lens :-)

Focal length - Image angle diagonal (24x36)
24mm - 84°
35mm - 63°
43mm - 53°
50mm - 47°
58mm - 41°
85mm - 29°
100mm - 24°
135mm - 18°
180mm - 14°
300mm - 8°

Difference between the 50 and 43mm lens is the same like it is between 50 and 58mm lenses!

Looks like Nikon tried to remake the 58/1.2 and failed. A tribute lens is not worth $1700 -- I'd much rather get an A7 with that kind of money...

Sigma is putting out some really nice lenses for sure!

The nighttime cityscape at f/1.4 on the D800 looks particularly impressive.

Not when you look at the corners - still a lot of coma. (though way way better than my 50/1.2 AIS).

It will be interesting to see the comparison shots between the 58/1.2 and the new 58/1.4G.

I really don't like that they went with the 58mm. I understand that it's a "legacy" focal length, yadda yadda, that doesn't make it a great focal length. At least not in my opinion. I use an 80mm on 6x7 and 50mm on 35mm, the 50 is already slight compression versus a true normal. The 58mm is going to be even more awkward for indoors or tight spaces. If I need compression, I use a mid-tele.

There is coma but I wouldn't characterize it as a lot. Seems rather modest to my eyes.

WO at 100% in the image above link is decent but far away from sharp.(I can think of many f1.4 lens will outperform this one) Bokeh and DOF transition is wonderful though. Coma for sure from its bokeh highlight! but no much cat eye, so mechanic vignette is indeed small as Nikon claimed. the f1.4 landscape shot show decent sharpness indicate it will perform better at longer distance just as many fast glass do like Leica 50lux ASPH, Zeiss Planar etc..
A decent lens, but $1700, I don't think so....you can't sell 'rendering' this much

why can't companies release good images to promote their new lenses? Those are horrible samples.

Any idea if the lens is made in China or Japan? If it is made in China, then it will be difficult to justify the consumer cost since production cost is so much less in China than in Japan.

The only F mount lens I've seen that can produce edges as sharp as that 58mm photo at f/1.4 is the Sigma 35mm

I forget to mention that f1.4 performance, yes it is indeed have good cross frame performance. from my lens collection, only 50lux M ASPH can outperform it on 3/4 of frame.

This might be a good candidate night lens for shooting sky at f1.4, in that sense, it is Noct II, (zeiss 55 will outperform it easily.) but how many people need this kind of f1.4 cross frame performance? considering it is not at the level of Otus Zeiss yet, whose performance at f1.4 can beat many f2.8 cross frame. certainly not in this case.

I love its looks but a tough sell is my opinion.

What's with the belly-aching, there are multiple less expensive versions of the 50mm 1.4 that are reasonably good. High performance has a price, frankly I wish they had pulled out all the stops and made it even better for $2-$3k. With a high performance, auto-focusing 50mm, Nikon would have no real competition considering the Canon 50 1.2L is pretty lousy AND costs $1600.

Part of the source of the complaining (me included) is that there are far more Nikkors that need updating than the 58/1.2 . . .

I personally would love updates to:
16/2.8D fisheye: Give us an AF version as good or better than the 16/3.5 AI
17-35/2.8AFS: Mine is pretty good, but needs improvement in those corners.
20/2.8D: Compact wide angle prime with improved sharpness and flare/ghosting control
45/2.8 Pancake: Well, maybe - mine is pretty darned good on my D800
135/2D: Come on, give us that 135/1.8AFS VR that you've patented
300/4 AFS: VR version is high on the list for many
400/5.6 AFS VR: Give the masses some reach that is compact & somewhat affordable
and many more.

If Nikon wants to increase sales, give us lenses that many would really buy, as opposed to the 58/1.4G which many will not (though I'm sure Nikon will make a profit on what they do sell).

I donīt say a 58mm lens is the best "normal" lens for everyone. It works well for me, but each has his own thinking and working. For tight spaces it is bad, there I love more a 35mm, but for sure a 50mm lens could be good too. For indoor portraits 58 works good.
