Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 58mm f/1.4G announced
Nikon announced the AF-S Nikkor 58mm f/1.4G, a premium 'normal' prime for full frame SLRs that's designed to deliver superb IQ, even at f/1.4.

Key Features:
  • 58mm f/1.4 lens that excels in low-light and nighttime applications but also offers exciting capabilities for everyday photography and HD video recording.
  • Virtually no sagittal coma flare or light falloff throughout the entire aperture range—even at the far edges of the frame—for exceptionally sharp, evenly lit, high-contrast shots.
  • Maintain fast aperture settings even when shooting distant subjects like cityscapes and landscapes to infinity.
  • 9 rounded-blade aperture for outstanding bokeh characteristics and enhanced depth of field control.
  • Flattering, versatile 58mm focal length (87mm equivalent on DX-format D-SLRs) that pays homage to the acclaimed Noct Nikkor 58mm f/1.2 lens.

So do I! But I did not have the money at the time and had to settle for a 50/1.4 and 55 micro.

I hope those edges/corners sharpen up by f/2.8.

Sorry, just to check, is the price a misprint

$1,696.95

I think there is an extra $1000 dollars there by mistake? If normal prime lenses are going to cost as much as decent full frame DSLR bodies then I can confidently predict the death of the latter.

I wonder about the bokeh, they claim it to be with soft edges. Undercorrected spherical abberation for soft background bokeh - and soap bubble bokeh for the foreground?

So much want. A little pricey, but I'll wait for real world reviews before pulling the trigger.

Price is an overkill. Oh well, count me out. Hopefully Sigma will make an equivalent at half the price.

I've been waiting for a proper 50mm from Nikon, and was hoping for a 50mm f/1.2.
But if the quality of this lens is the same or better than the 85mm 1.4 but without the CA, I'll pick one up.
And yes, $1700 is way too much, but fortunately for me I live in Norway, here it can be had for the bargain price of $2500

Nikon France posted full-sized versions of the samples.

The nighttime cityscape at f/1.4 on the D800 looks particularly impressive.

Good job Nikon. I can see your company is developing lenses customers want.

/sarcasm

At least sigma has stepped up to give me hope.

Oddball focal length for absurd price. Hopefully sigma will release a new 50mm 1.4.

Hell, if it's on par with the 28/1.8 I'd pick it up.

Sigma may make this they may make that. Bottom line is they made one good lens and now people are hinging purchases on fantasy lenses that don't even exist yet. If Sigma made a 50 as nice as their 35, I'd surely grab it and love it, but sitting around and waiting for it is like those pesky D400 guys....

That MTF looks woefully inadequate at f/1.4 for a $1,600 normal. It's not bad at all in absolute terms, but only ~58% MTF at 30lp wide open means it isn't cutting glass at that aperture, and to be worth $1,600, it needs to.

Now that I own the 200 VRII I have given up on reading MTF charts. Thanks a lot chubby!!! But I'll still buy this lens to add to my arsenal. Seems it should be right on par with the 85 1.4G in terms of contrast and sharpness.

58mm is a very classic focal lenght.
Photo newbies probably donīt know lenses like the legendary Minolta Rokkor 58mm f/1.2, Rokkor 58/1.4, Helios 44 58mm/2.0, Zeiss Biotar 58mm/2.0, Nikon Noc 58/1.2, Nikon 58/1.4, Voigtlaender Nokton 58mm/1.4, Canon FD 58mm/1.2 and probably more.
57mm would be a bit more odd, there was only the Konica Hexanon 57mm/1.2 and 1.4 as far as I know.

BTW: I love the 58mm focal length on my Canon EOS 5D - more than the Canon EF50/1.4 and 1.8 and Zeiss 50/1.4 lenses.

Maybe you could answer what I asked in the other thread. What is the significance of 58mm? Not so much as the actual focal length, but as the named focal length.

On top of the high price the AFS will no doubt be slow. My Sig35 does everything right no need for this. If Sigma keeps up with the ART lens make overs Nikon will finally have some competition. I can't weight for the 135 1/8. I bet we will see
a new 50, 85 version as well. For now I can live with the Nikon 501/8 and 851/8.
plus I still love my 105f2

Just looked at the flickr samples. The wide open night city scape looks out of focus to me. I wonder if he locked it down and used live-view or not. My Sigma 35 1.4 Art is a lot sharper than this for less. Nikon and Canon have a lot of work ahead of them with these third party lens makers superior glass for less.

If it's like Nikon other f1.4 offerings it will be dog slow to focus. I hope this is not the case. No way I would pay that much for a 50ish lens unless it was an f1.2.
