p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Nikonian Seeking Advice on a Canon Camera

I'm a Nikon shooter when it comes to DSLR's, but I have a cousin whom has a 6 year old Canon Rebel and wants to upgrade. Based on the current line-up, I was thinking of directing her to either a EOS Rebel T5i or an EOS 70D as those two seem to fit her budget and performance needs.

The 70D appears to be just released ... I'm not sure on the T5i.

Any thoughts or information you can provide would be most appreciated.

Cheers,
Andre

Why do they want to upgrade? How can we suggest a good body when w have no idea on the uses or expectations?

Anyhow the 70D is awesome go for that

If a hypothetical 'T6i' existed, with the T5i's body but the 70D's sensor and processor, that'd probably be the best bet. Instead, we do have the 70D, and it's the bee's knees on Canon crop outside of the intense sports, action, and birding capability of the otherwise unspectacular (well, aging) 7D.

So, in short, buying right now, the 70D and the 18-135 kit lens is unbeatable. I'm running with a 6D and better glass, and I still want one.

Good questions. Let me elaborate.

Her current camera is showing its age and is starting to have things break on it. She would like a new body that is reliable.

She is interested in three things:
- Family Photos
- Her kids' sports
- Landscapes

She is happy with the performance of her current camera except in the area of sports. To address that she would like to have better low-light performance and is considering the 70-200 (the $1500 version) to address that. Right now she's using her 18-200 in the 150-200 range 99% of the time, so the 70-200 gains her two stops.

BUT, her more pressing need is to upgrade her camera body due to the current one starting to fall apart. AND, her total budget is $2000 (maybe $2500) for both lens and camera. Looking at the specs, the T5i seems like a good body and the price of that body with the 70-200 adds up to $2000 when all rebates are considered.

Is the 70D really worth $500 more than the T5i? I can judge Nikon bodies in a flash, but it's had to me to fully appreciate the differences between the bodies outside of the specs.

The price difference of the 70D is due to many small improvements - burst rate, viewfinder coverage, responsiveness, et al.

It is a better camera - than the T5i. But in reality (in actual use) it's still pretty close to the 60D.

Two choices:

A 60D with a 70-200 f2.8 (non-IS).

A 70D with a 70-200 f2.8 IS II.

Thanks, this is helpful. I'm hesitant to go with the 60D figuring that for the price the T5i having a newer generation sensor would provide better high ISO performance. Am I correct that the T5i is a newer sensor and if so, has better performance?

Also, IQ and high-ISO is only part of the equation. But I don't have a feel for the 60D vs. the T5i with regards to AF performance, responsivness, etch.

Depending on the body you choose, if it's on Canon's refurb site I would wait until the body you want and the 70-200 2.8 II is in stock and get them both refurbished with the 20% CLP discount. You could probably swing <$2500 for pretty much every ASP-C crop body in the CLP program. $1600 before tax for a refurb 70-200 2.8 II is a super good price IMO.

It sounds like you're leaning toward the T5i, but in case you do consider a mid-range mode, here are a few thoughts on 70D vs. 60D:

  1. 70D has the new on-sensor phase-detect Live View AF system permitting smooth and quick autofocus for video capture (and much faster AF for stills, if you shoot that way).
  2. The rear LCD features touch controls and tap-to-focus
  3. The AF system is an updated/improved versrion of the 7D, quite a bit more advance than that 60D
  4. The 70D supports micro-focus adjust (MFA), while the 60D does not
  5. 70D has a faster framerate

I owned a 60D and it's a fine camera, but if the cost difference is not a bid deal, then the 70D is improved in some significant ways.

If she's usually at the 200mm end of the zoom range then maybe the 200/2.8L prime is worth looking at for the sports shooting. It's a great value IMO...you can often get used ones in mint condition for less than $700 and the IQ of the copy I had rivaled the IQ of my 70-200/2.8 II IS at 200/2.8 for a fraction of the cost. To this day it remains one of the best lenses I've ever used for servo AF shooting and it also takes an extender very well if you need a bit more length.

As for the camera...personally I would go with the 70D for the improved AF for sports...also the video capabilities would be very handy for the family stuff.

Assuming that she would like to take videos of sports (kids soccer, etc), the 70D is by far and away the best for video since it will focus and track subjects while capturing video. Its by far the best if you need AF for sports, zooming and focusing manually on moving subjects is pretty much hopeless with a T5i.

Watch for big sales coming up soon, people are holding back on buying high end gear due to the political events in Washington. Sellers will be forced to clear inventory, and are likely pounding Canon for a deep discount sale for black Friday or even sooner.

The 70D got a very positive review at The Digital Picture.

Canon has three lines of dslrs. Their consumer line which are the rebels their pro line which are the 1ds and their mid line which are the 5&7ds and the xxDs. I hope this helps go to canons website to see the specs for a specific model.

On sensor performance alone, 70D > T5i/SL1/EOS-M > 7D/60D.

On sports performance, 70D ~ 7D (picking nits for most uses) > everything but a 5D III/1D.

On handling, 7D > 70D >60D >T5i.

Overall? 70D or T5i, with the best being 70D + 70-200/2.8L IS II, begged, borrowed, or stolen.

The refurbished store on Canon's site is probably the best place for the lens, and likely the camera unless you find a good sale. Nikon's D5300 did just get announced, after all.

I love my Canon gear, but you might want to look at the new Nikon D5300 as well.

Andre, having shot sports for many years, I highly suggest the 70D over the T5i. As for glass there is no question for the need of a f/2.8 version. As long as her kids are small and she has access, the 70-200 will serve well. Also recommend picking up a used one without the IS which can be found for less than $1000.

If your cousin doesn't mind refurbished. Look at canon loyalty program. Once her rebel break, call canon. They'll give her discount on refurbished body and lenses. The refurbished are like new and come with 1 year warranty.
