I want to own something fast. Torn on 50 or an 85 but occasionally a 35 makes me smile. Thoughts? Thank you.

Cannot help you without knowing what you shoot.

I do not own a 50.

To any burgeoning documentary photog. I'd always recommend a 35 and a 85.

With those two focal lengths the 50 is redundant.

This would be perfect for me
35 f/1
50 f/1.2
85 f/1.4
135 f/1.8

Your question is unanswerable, at least in a meaningful way. Are you considering full frame or crop? What sort of photography? What is your personal preference?

If you are trying to figure out what prime focal length would be most interesting for your photography, perhaps the most effective way to figure it out is to shoot with a zoom that includes the focal lengths that interest you.

I've owned all three and found the fast 35 on my camera the most: easiest to shoot with and fit the way I look at city and landscapes. I like the 50mm--reminds me of closing one eye--but is more suited to cluttered environments where I need to exclude things. The 85mm made little sense--felt like I was looking through a tube--and, save for rare portraits, I usually wished I had something wider.

Looking at your profile - "getting started", "lots to learn".
sounds like you are looking for gear, not talking about your photography. Tell us more.
I'd follow Dan's advice based on what you said.
Get a mid range zoom and shoot a lot. If your zoom cannot meet your needs, then get what you need.

James -- For a fast lens on FF (I see you have a 6D), I like the 50/1.2L. I have a Samyang 35/1.4, and while nice, it doesn't' thrill me as much as the look I get from the 50. Near wide open it is velvety soft with beautiful colors, and stopped down my copy is extremely sharp. And the 50 is smaller too. I like the DOF and OOF areas best in the 50 compared to the 35/1.4 and 85/1.2L (too big, too heavy, and too slow of focusing for the high price). I find the 50 nimble and quick to shoot.

The 50 would be my choice for shallow DOF video too -- just enough DOF to get by.

I would undoubtedly like the 35/1.4L better than my Samyang, but not enough to go from the EF 35/2 I own for its AF. I will likely buy the new 35/2 IS within 6 months, but no plans for any other 85 than the Samyang 85/1.4 I have. You might want to look at the Sigma 35/1.4 if you decide on that focal length.

Good luck choosing! They all produce beautiful visual effects.
