Perhaps a dumb question but I assume you mean Photoshop CS6, and not Photoshop 6 - right?

There is probably no reason to update unless you have a new camera or lens.

From Adobes Site: "No new features or functionality will be available in ACR to Photoshop CS6 customers as part of those updates."

Did you use the Adobe Update Manager to apply the update?

This is funny. I found a book on my bookshelf last week which was a Photoshop 6 tutorial of some kind. I said to myself, "self, when did you order this?". Then I looked at the publish date inside the front cover. September 2000! Yeah it's been that long since 6.0. And to think I started with 2.0 on the Mac in about 1992. And I still only use about 1% of the program's capabilities.

I have updated my CS6 to the latest camera raw without any problem. I updated with the update link in the help menu in the software.

Not quite correct: Currently, CS6 supports every single camera and lens that CC does. They have said that will change in due time, but for now, it holds true. You don't get all the CC features, but you get the 7.x features with new cameras.
