I mentioned this forum first- looking for people who were comparing say the 35/1.4 A to the 35L, or the 50/1.4's, or the 85's, for example. Somehow, it's the people that admire Zeiss lenses that seem to back Sigma the most, but when you find people that have really tested the hell out of them, exchanged copies, tried paying for calibration, etc., you realize that Sigma might just not be worth your effort for a particular lens, nice as the optics are.
To me this is two sweeping generalizations made to defend one persons opinion, not even their experience.
first: you imply that the people who "back sigma the most" are not people who have real practical experience with those lenses -- ie: "when you find people that have really tested the hell out of them" --- that in fact they are people who have no practical experience with those lenses. why?
second: you imply that anybody who has "really tested the hell out of sigma lenses" would agree that sigma is not worth buying. any proof beyond conjecture or saying some people on the web said so?
Again: there are many happy sigma customers -- are you suggesting that those customers are in fact clueless to the inferiority of their lens choice? Are you suggesting that they do no research nor do they bother getting their lenses calibrated etc?
Really, I am sorry to take such a confrontational stance, but you ARE suggesting that I have in fact been duped by sigma due to my ignorance when it comes to my lens purchases. Why do that?
here is an analogy: just because I dont like the food at the italian restaurant down the road doesnt mean I would or should spend my time and effort berating customers for the fact that they do like the food.
I have purchased several canon lenses that, even after calibration, never focused properly -- and if you read the review section here, you can find many other that have had the same experiences: should I then make sweeping generalizations that canon does not make a good enough lens for everyone's shooting needs?
And you make these sweeping generalizations based on what experience? one lens purchase and some anonymous reviews on web sites?
Have you in fact purchased tens of sigma lenses, exchanged them, had them calibrated, and 'tested the hell outta them' yourself?
I trust first hand reviews by members on this site more than anything -- and the fact is that many people do in fact like some sigma lenses (myself included) and I refuse to believe that we are actually very unsophisticated when it comes to our lens purchases.
