This lens surfaced as a rumor only a couple of days ago.. Well, It just got real!

I'm guessing this lens will be a real winner if it beats the 24-105L as much as the Sigma 35 beats the 35L.

A few words from Sigma:

This new zoom fulfills Sigma’s uncompromising pursuit of high resolution.

The image sensors of digital SLR cameras continue to offer higher and higher resolution, and photographers are looking for high-performance lenses that leverage these sensors’ full power. In the case of zoom lenses as well, which are a dependable go-to in a wide variety of photographic conditions, photographers want convenience combined with exceptional optical performance. The new SIGMA 24-105mm F4 DG OS HSM zoom lens more than fulfills these requirements, offering exceptionally stable high resolution from wide-angle to medium telephoto photography.

While featuring a large-aperture 82mm filter size, this lens minimizes optical aberrations and avoids reduced peripheral brightness, an issue that tends to affect lenses with similar specifications. Each lens is checked with Sigma’s proprietary A1 MTF (modulation transfer function) measuring system to ensure it offers exceptional quality for the high-megapixel era. Try this new high-performance zoom for yourself, and experience Sigma’s uncompromising pursuit of high resolution.

The 82mm filter size could be a clue to Sigma trying to beat Canon in less vignetting & barrel distortion, at the wide end & wide open.

Time will tell.

Interesting times over at Sigma. Keep them coming. Love the competitive pressures they are bringing to the table.

Optically, I am sure it will be another great lens from Sigma. I have been burned too many times by the hit-or-miss reverse engineered AF on Sigma lenses though to take a chance. At least not until these new lenses have been out for a couple years and fully tested, reviewed.

And what will be the price? The Canon 24-105L is pretty "cheap" when bought as a kit.

Sigma keeps impressing. Really looking forward to see how this lens will compare to Canon's very decent 24-105 lens. I am using it almost exclusively for landscapes and actually, most of the time on a tripod and MF via live view. I am happy with results I get from 24-105. Wondering where and how Sigma is going to be better, but good luck for them....I can pretty much see that many folks will soon have only Sigma glass in their backpacks.

I understand. Same shit happend to me with the Sigma 84 and a couple of other lenses. But after the Sigma 35 and the new USB-dock that lets you tweak the lens firmware and alter the AF-settings, I've had zero problems.

But is the 24-105L pretty optically excellent? Sharp across the frame, e.t.c? No.

I guess that will be the Sigma's big selling point.

What chance are you talking about. If you have problems with AF, either exchange for another or send to Sigma to get it serviced. Up here in Canada we have a 6 year warranty on Sigma lens so I don't feel I am taking any chance at all purchasing a Sigma.

You need to stop listening to the Internet garbage and decide for yourself. Wayyyy to many parrots on the net that have exactly zero experience with the lenses, yet they are all experts on it because the Internet says so.

I'm a bit surprised that they didn't come out with a 24-70f2.8 OS.
If it matched the Canon in IQ while adding OS, then...

But still, if you were to believe the Sigma literature, then this should be an outstanding lens.
"This new zoom fulfills Sigma’s uncompromising pursuit of high resolution."
"The full realization of the Art product concept for you to hold in your own hands and appreciate with your own eyes."

The MTF looks potentially fairly poor at 24mm (as in a tiny bit better center frame than the 24-105L but maybe similar at the edges?). I don't know how Sigma MTF charts translate to real world very well though. Maybe it will do very well.

It needs to match the 24-70 f/4 IS and not just the 24-105 IS if it is to sell and it actually needs to outdo the 24-105 IS, since those are so cheap now and sealed

I just saw the announcement. The 24-105mm range is invaluable for me and if this is provides better performance at a lower price than the Canon, I will be getting this.

I'm intrigued. I was planning on buying an UWA like the 16-35L II or even the Tokina 16-28, but this seems rather promising for different reasons. Now it's got me wondering if Sigma's got a 16-35 competitor in the wings

My main curiously is price. Did they mention that anywhere? This could be a good landscape lens if it exceeds the 24-105L throughout the entire zoom range. I hope it create sweet lighstars similiar to the 24-70II with its 9 apeture blades. MFD is the same as the 24-105L.

I don't entirely understand this product. The canon 24-105 is a great lens and pretty darn affordable. Unless this thing is 2.8 or $600 I don't see the point especially since Sigma often has focus issues.

24-105 is a good lens, not great. It is weak at 24, where I like to use it. If the Sigma is better atb24, it's got me sold.

The lens that has me shaking my head is the 24-70 F4 priced at $1400. If this Sigma is better than the 24-70 and is cheaper...then bye-bye 24-70.

That pricing is sheer lunacy and as Canon realised with the insanity of their 24/28/35 IS pricing, it can't last at that level. It's at best an $700 lens, but even at $200 it would be of zero interest to me. If this Sigma is noticably better than the 24-105L on distortion, and corner and edge performance and a little bit sharper in general, it'd be very tempting. Also it'll need the close focus and mfd specs as good as the 24-105L too.

Mine at 24 is not that bad.
