Alright I know that there are a bunch of people on here that use this combo and produce some stunning images. Here is my question, I have a D7100 and was wondering if I would be better off just cropping my images to get to where they would be with the tc on. I had the newest 1.4 tc and just sold it beacuse I found that I could crop further without the tc on and get better results. I just purchased another one to make sure that I didn't just have something strange going on. I really can't see much of a difference in sharpness between the bare lens cropped and the lens with the tc on. The last tc I had the images without the tc on were much sharper, so I sold it. Is this nornal? I even fine tuned the lens with the tc on and was still getting the same results. It almost doesn't seem worth it to have a tc when you can just crop further on the image taken with the naked lens. I hope this makes sense.

The beauty of cropping vs TC-14E II is you don't lose a stop of light...that means
captures can be made @1/2 the ISO or twice the SS (your call) With the f2/f2.8
Superteles, the difference is less pronounced. I find the TC-17E II strikes a happy
medium between reach and light loss for 300 f4 BIF. Personal preference, YMMV.

So I could save myself the $350 and just crop and get the same results and not lose a stop of light? So is there really any benefilt to my setup using the tc then Thanks for the respose.

I think the only benefit (using the TC) would be in very low light.
Files tend to fall apart rather quickly when cropped at high ISO's.

I have the 1.7 TC II attached all the time to my Nikon 300mm f4 and I really impressed about the sharpness and AF speed.

I'm using it with a D600

I had a similar question and got some very good advice from this post http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1243058/0#11825476
I personally like to have as much magnification in the view finder for focusing that the available light will allow (old eyes) and get as much reach as possible. My thoughts are that the D7100 + 300f4 with TCís 1.4, 1.7, & 2.0 should be able provide four options of magnification and aperture. Acceptable IQ depends on what is acceptable to the photographer and their intended use of the photo. Iím not professional and my photos only have to satisfy me so it's just my opinion.

Great photos Will. Your custom PC settings and advice with this combo has helped get me on the right track getting SOOC images with this combo. Hope you enjoyed the beer.

I did, thanks again Mitch. The 1.4 is beyond "acceptable" IMO...just need some light and adequate SS as seen here.
D800 in 1.2 crop mode gives a 504mm FOV with plenty of MP's to print LARGE. Sandhills up next, I can hear them.
