Just curious if anyone has gotten ahold of a Sigma 18-35 1.8, and what do you think of it?

Sigma doesn't make it in a mount for any camera I would consider purchasing, so no interest from me.

I have it in a Canon mount and it is a very good lens. I feel it is the perfect indoor family event lens. I also bought the USB dock and tweeked the lens a bit. The images have a "prime lens" feel to them. The lens is heavy but I'm used to the weight of fast primes anyway. I see a complaints about focus issues but bear in mind the DOF is very shallow with this lens wide open and I have no more focus problems with this lens than any other fast lens. Very happy with the purchase.

The Nikon mount came in stock. I just got mine last friday from B&H.
I took a bunch of photos and haven't had the time to see what came out.
Its in a near beast category in terms of weight and the controls are smooth/fluid-stiff. On AF-C I didn't notice too much focus lag but its hard to tell. I only did one motion and while in motion series. I wish with its weight it had stabilization.

I'm only going to keep it if a D400 comes out. Otherwise i'll have to sell it.

I got my Sigma 18-35 1.8 for Nikon last week, pre-ordered June 14 from B&H. My initial impressions are good, I've done just a bit of testing so far and I'm posting the results on my site as I get more experience with it: http://www.wingedmammal.com/daily_emergence/sigma_18-35_18/sigma_18-35.shtml

Ok so from my weekend from shooing what i got from my horrid hands.
Shooting with available light with low shutter speeds like 60-125 at 1.8 wasn't so great for me. It has to do with the sheer weight of the lens. That extra half pound at the end wasn't helping. (I also use a Sigma 50MM/1.4 and it generally runs fine)

So if you can overcome handshaking (which is my problem) it seems to be a fine lens.

Nice samples, Ektar, thank you for posting them.

I am interested in this lens, been meaning to look at how it compares to the Nikon 16-35 VR (size and weight). If I do 'downsize' to APS-C, the 1.8 speed advantage would be quite welcome.

ETA: Ok, so it's a tad heavier than the Nikon VR, and just slightly less bulky.

In order to produce a review of this lens, I had to "settle" for a Canon mount and test it on the 60D first. I sent that one back and I now have a Nikon version as well, and it's incredible, but of course the review is already done. In short, this lens is AMAZING. I only wish Sigma would create more fast / wide lenses!!!!

I won't share any of the images here since this is the Nikon section of the forum, but suffice it to say that the lens produces some STUNNING results and I'm really loving using it for general photography, landscapes, and of course astro. I wish it were wider though!

Nice review, Matthew. The first photo in your review is stunning... Are you SURE it's f/1.8?? on a zoom??!

Trust me, my jaw dropped about the same amount too! It's just that flawlessly sharp.

I have yet to put it to the ultimate test, the AA-filter-less D7100, but judging by how much it is out-resolving my current D5200, I'd say that this lens is a perfectionist's dream come true...

Again, like I said, as a landscape and astro-photographer I only wish the thing were wider!

Of course like everyone has been saying, I'd just about kill for an 18-35 f/2 full-frame, although that would be enormous judging by the relative size (and crappyness) of the likes of the Canon 16-35 f/2.8. Therefore, I'd probably be even MORE in favor of a crop-sensor 11-16mm f/1.8, or anything in that range that could be kept to a "manageable on backpacking trips" type of size. Gosh, if I had a Sigma 11-16mm f/1.8 DC, a 30mm f/1.4, and a 50-150mm f/2.8, (the mk1 version, of course,) ...Then I could have the ultimate Sigma setup composed of lenses almost entirely un-available in the Nikon mount.

I hate to say it, but IMO it is quite a tragedy that Nikon has churned out such incredible DX sensors in the past year or two, especially their stunning 24 MP sensor with and without an AA filter, (I have my D5300 on order!) ...and yet they haven't developed a "pro-grade" crop-sensor lens since, well, the 12-24 and 17-55. (Although I have found the 10-24 to be quite superb!)

Nice samples. I might want to use my DX gear more often with such a lens.

I went ahead and ordered one. Looks perfect for lots of things (esp. indoor people images and outdoor night fun).

If Sig will come out with an affordable 400 or 500 next, I'll know they really loves me.

Looks like somebody told that dog that Nikon was never going to release the D400.

I took the Sigma 18-35 1.8 for Nikon to the BlizzCon gaming convention last weekend and got some real-world experience with it on my D7100. I was happy with it, very sharp. My main gripes were the limited zoom range and I had a Lee ND filter on it almost the whole time so I couldn't use the lens hood which may have contributed to some lens flare.
