p.1 #1 · Canon G-Series Photos

I had another occasion today to drag along my G10 for a shot I needed taken of myself at the shooting range. The reason was a little sad -- one of our top shooters, Ted Zysk, a multi-time International and multi-time National Champion, had passed away. We were pretty good friends and competitors, and about 15 years ago he formed "Team Zysk" composed of himself, his two teenage kids, myself and another fellow, to act as an "us against the world" sort of competitive juggernaut, with tongue slightly in cheek.

Anyhow, to show the hat of that period, and to comment on it all, I decided to model. My (living) friend, Ramon Herrera (that's him in the red LASC club shirt) used the camera as I set it up and took a nice series of shots during a cease-fire in the day's competition. Images PP in LR5 with minor tweaks.

One of the wonderful things, well a couple, about the G-series, and especially the G9 to present, is the RAW imaging along with fill flash at high shutter speeds. This is so easily done with these models, to such good effect.

Here are a couple shots from today. They may not win any awards, but the photos look great on Facebook.

Please post some of your favorite G-Series shots (G1 through the G1X, and on).

R.I.P. Ted!

The G11 is a great little camera. But having said that, I much prefer the Sony RX100.

Good Afternoon Jim!,

I still have my original G-1 (complete with box), and the G-10, which is usually with me in the lab and "other places"...

Here are three shots from a quick trip to Alaska last year, with the G-10, which included a landing at just under 15,000ft up on Mt. McKinley (yes, it was planned...).

Regards,

Edd

As a fan of the G series I should contribute. I really liked my G10.

Until the G1X came along. Really in a different league when viewed on a large display.

I just picked up a G15 last week; wanted something more portable then my 1d series bodies and I have to admit that I am really impressed with the quality of the pictures.

Hi,

I decided to charge-up the G1 packs and grab a few shots today around Woodstock (CT). The EXIF gets stripped in Bridge/CS6 (DPP does not handle the CRW file from the G1), and even at ISO 50, it is noisy. But then again, I bought this camera in October of 2000, and it is still ticking...

Regards,

Edd

My G9 has served as my underwater camera for a few trips to Cozumel but I do use it for some work related stuff too. The first one has to be my all time favorite with it because it's the only time I've seen a Dolphin while diving and when I saw the fin coming up from behind the ridge I expected a shark. All were shot in RAW & processed with ACR / CS 4 or CS 6

I can't add images on here but would like to add I upgraded to the G1X from the G10 and get great images from both......the G1X had the edge obviously but the G10 is still the one most likely to be in my pocket when off out somewhere.

The G10 has been described as a 'one trick camera'...that is, images are only good up to ISO 100. Have to disagree with that although I wouldn't personally go beyond ISO 200 for colour but would stretch to ISO 800 if I wanted a B+W image looking a bit like HP5 film.

What users might like to think more about is the aperture they use. After reading on the web that f3.5 was the optimum aperture for the lens / sensor combination I tested it myself and have to agree...I now use mainly AP with the G10 at that setting when possible.

All in all a great little camera and I understand it is starting to be regarded as a bit of a Canon 'classic'.

Forgot about underwater; the waterproof housing for the G12 was affordable (especially used on this forum), so I bought one.

I only took a few shots this last week with the G10 (brought along as my "extra" camera to the 1Ds3).

Even though the G10 is often derided for being an "ISO 80" camera, it does have outstanding IS and the nice higher MP count of nearly 15MP. This allows a pretty slow shutter speed hand held, sometimes working for me down to 1/5 sec with pretty good sharpness -- sharp enough to know what you are looking at without too much blur interference.

These shots, although far from perfect, wouldn't have worked out as well with the FF and 24-105 IS (I could probably have done it, but this G10 is soooo convenient to haul around!). On the pano, I used 1/25 and wide open at ISO 100. I did take some with the 1Ds3 and the old 24/2.8, at ISO 800, and they came out pretty well (see last shot), but it isn't always an option.

Pano is a cropped two-shot composite from the G10.

Processing in LR5 and stitch with PSE 10.

Ha-ha! Looks kind of "Duck Dynasty", doesn't it? (Without the money!)

Weird how FM is converting the f/stop numbers! Those shots above were at f/2.8, f/3.2, f/2.8, and f/5.6 (for the 24mm ). Strange!

Fred -- are these now converted to T-numbers? Ha-ha!

OK, I'll try to help. This was shot with the G9 as part of an insurance appraisal set but I also printed it at 13 X 19 for the customer & it came out great.
