D3x can't compete. And I won't buy D3x (same MPs as D610) Just compare. D3x sensor is at least 6 years old tech.
D3s, abit younger, not much 12 MPs. I can shoot fast. Is selling fastter and for more than D3x.
Just wonder.

Fact that its a lot like cheaper variant of D4. Those 4 mpix doesnt matter much for most, high ISO is far far ahead of pretty much everything. I would say that per-pixel it actually beats D4 (yea I know, D4 owners will try to burn me on stake now).

Also expensive more than D3x is simply cause D3x isnt "camera for everything", while D3s is (ok 12 mpix landscapes might not be standart today, but its possible, especially cause DR is sweet and you dont need to be afraid of ISO higher than base or sub-base).

I haven't used any and thinking in the near future to get one, but is the D3s really far far ahead in high ISO performance?

high iso, beautiful colors out of the box, great handling, 12mp quite adequate unless you're printing really big, a lot more forgiving that the 36mp sensor. What's not to like ?

I had D3 for many years. Great camera. I had D4 for less than a year. Not impressed and happy it is gone. Now I am happy with D800e.
If I was to spend $3000.00 for another camera, I am not so sure I would get an old D3s. D800e or for less than $2000.00 I can get a good NEW D610. Admittedly, only D3s can shoot at 10fps, but the other can shoot at 6 or 7 fps and at much much higher PMs.

Yes. Its D4 level. Even ISO 800 is cleaner or as clean as some mirrorless are on base ISO. Per-pixel its camera with best SNR so far. D4 is actually slightly worse, but it has native ISO 100 and better DR, so its probably over-all better camera, just that difference isnt huge by any stretch.. D4 is (apart from controls, ergonomics) just a small evolution of D3s.

And as it was mentioned, it has rather nice colors.. (actually one of few that I can like from Nikon, reminded me bit of D3x, probably similar or same color matrix).

I never had a D3s, I actually wanted one but as is mentioned in this thread title the D4 isn't costing that much more so I got it instead. I hate that it has the xqd slot instead of 2 cf slots.. but in everything I have read, I never saw anything that said the D4 has worse SNR than the D3s. Either way though - I can get shots from the D4 that you could print full size at ISO 12800 with almost no noise with careful editing - even at 25600 it looks pretty damn good - and by the time you down size to the output of the 12mp d3s you lose even more noise. Not saying you are wrong, just saying they are both unbelievable cameras in terms of high ISO - best in the world really.

^For the 1st and 3rd photos, after your post-NR, looks like 3,200 on a D700.

The D4 is extremely expensive and the D3s gets you most of the way there. The D3x is going to appeal to very few with the D800 around.

I don't understand the price of the D3s in relation to the D3 and D4. The D3s doesn't sit in the middle of the two on price, it seems to be closer to the D4 used price than the D3 used price. I think a low mileage used D3 is the best bargain out there.

I got the D4 refurb for 4899 at roberts, at the time the D3s was still sitting at between 3500 (for a beat up one with high shutter count) up to 4700. The D3 was 2800 for a refurb. I think now the D3 is lower than that and it really is still a great camera, especially around 2300 dollars. I wanted the bigger buffer, and the good condition low use D3s options out there were with in a few hundred dollars of the D4.

If I could have got the D3s new in that range I would have done it - I loved the images that came from the D700, and liked the layout of the controls better. Plus not having matching card slots bothers me. 4 extra mp is nice and it does have great color.

D4 is a great camera no doubt, but I'd rather have a D3s because of the batteries and dual CF slots.

I just picked up a D3s and it is one sweet camera.

Current pricing?

D4 - $4900
D3s - $3400
D3 - $2200

Answer to the original question:
Just because it is the best camera made by Nikon. The D4 really does add anything spectacular. In fact the D4 is a serious step backwards in terms of compatibility. The D4 is not only much more expensive, but you have to add batteries, new incompatible card readers and ridiculously expensive memory cards (XQD), making the total package between $500 and $1000 even more expensive.
For my kind of 'allround' photography, I regret having bought a D4, but the D3s was not available anymore when I made the choice.

that pretty much is the same reasoning for me. I always think I could spend that money on other lenses.
