My D800 just feel 3 feet off the tripod onto grass. I guess I did not have the plate tighten enough . How stupid can one get
The sb900 was attached.

The hot shoe is bent and loose. The camera will not auto focus with ant lens.

Since this is impact damage , and I will be paying for repair , is it best to send to Nikon or to an authorized service center?

Where do you suggest I can send for repair?

Thanks
Birdie

Why would you not use Nikon. They're probably the best or most reliable for a repair of that type. Any repairs are unfortunately expensive.

Having read so many negative reports on Nikon repair is why I hesitate. Since I will be paying , I guess my question should be- send to Nikon or send to an authorized repair shop?

Sorry to hear, bummer news

This would only apply if you were expecting them to repair your fallen camera under warranty. I'm certain they will repair your camera as long as you don't claim it's due by warranty

It's worth remembering that the only type of feedback on camera repair that you might see are negative reports. When you get something repaired and all is OK you usually don't post it, it was expected.

Highly recommend APS, http://nikoncamerarepair.com/ . I was searching for alternatives to repair a lens and came across many other threads recommending them.

Thank you gentlemen for your replies. I spoke to APS, they are not sure about parts for the D800, so off to Nikon it goes .

Again, thank you everyone.

Just hope it's repairable economically. If you bent the housing a replacement may be necessary.

I do so hope that it is economical to repair. Amazing to think that a 3 foot drop to the thick grass could do so much damage .

Better question maybe, would a lesser of a body shattered into pieces? Held up better?

Sorry to hear that... what a bummer. It is best to send it to Nikon, imo.

Good luck.

(If you have) your home owners insurance may pay a portion of the repair. I'd call em and see what they say. I bumped (accident) a tripod and knocked down a 4X5 field camera, home owners insurance paid!
