p.1 #1 · Aurora from last night

Congratulations to Hardcore for winning Feature Thread of the Week with 13 votes - View Previous Winners

Took some aurora shots last night. Missed the best part. Was laying in bed watching them get better and better to the point where I wasn't going to be able to sleep unless I went out and took some shots. Lucky for me, I can just go back 100' to the river and get some nice reflections.

Iím so jealous! What an awesome sky. I think a square crop of only the sky in #2 would make a great abstract print.

What part of Canada are you from? I got a "red" aurora alert to my email very late 2 nights ago but unfortunately didnt see it till I woke up for work.

Hey Justin,

Thanks! Just straight east of you in the middle of Saskatchewan. La Ronge to be exact. Missed the main impact on the night of the 8th, but caught some nice lights around 11:00PM last night.

Wow! Especially love the reflection in the first image.

Nice shots and great to have a decent location within walking distance.

Corey, I assume this is the Zeiss 21/2.8? How do you find the coma at the corners with this lens when shooting nightscapes?

Great shots, it was too cloudy here for the last two CME impacts. I could see the green through the clouds but nothing worth photographing. I'm hoping for more CMEs and clear skies soon.

These were taken with the Nikon 14-24mm @ F2.8. Used to have the Zeiss, now only the 14-24mm.

Ya, missed the first one due to overcast skies! Frustrating seeing there is going to be amazing northern lights and not being able to photograph them!

Does that mean you find the coma less for the 14-24/2.8 @ 21mm than the Zeiss 21/2.8, OR you prefer the convenience of the focal range?

Didn't compare the 2 lenses for Coma, sorry. I much prefer the Nikon for the convenience like you said. Slightly less sharp @ F2.8, but pretty darn close!

Wow...very nice! High n my to-do list is capturing the aurora. I thought I was understanding quicker shutter speeds to be best but you just tossed that beliefs out the window.

I've got to find a way to get out and get some images. No opportunity for it in Southern California

Nice. Pretty cool that these are created by a fluid rotating core of iron and heavy elements at the center of the earth that creates a magnetic field that deflects deadly solar radiation.
