I was hoping someone here might be able to provide me with some samples shot with the D800 and the older 80-400mm so I can get a feel for the combo.

Thanks for your help,

Josh

I'd take the newer AF-S 80-400 if you absolutely have to have 400mm. Otherwise, between the AF-D 80-400 VR and the 70-300 VR, I'd take the 70-300.

I'll see if I have time to snap a few with the old 80-400 VR and 70-300 VR. I don't have the new AF-S 80-400 VR.

Hi Josh,
Donít have that combo, but I do have the AF VR 80-400 D. A lot of photographers didnít like that lens. I have used it for several years with a D80 have been more than satisfied with the performance. My recently purchased D71k greatly improved low light performance. Shooting in manual or aperture priority at f8 + >1/400 gives best IQ at 400mm. Pre-focusing and setting the focus to Limit improves focus speed. I also recently purchased a 300 f4 for BIF. In my limited experience the 300 f4 gives better SOOC JPEG with a TC at 420mm than the 80- 400 at 400mm. But after tweaking the Picture Controls and post processing the 80-400 images are pretty close to my eye
.
I also have a 70-300vr. Itís a good lens but personally I would rather have the 80-400 even without AFS. Of course most of the time mine is at 400m.

You may be hard pressed to find images with D800 + 80- 400D. There is a guy named Morris that posts some fantastic images he gets with the D200 + 80-400D in The Nature and Wild life forum. Here's a link to some he posted with with a 1.4x TC. http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1245255/0

I had the old 80-400mm "D" version and used it with a D80, D300, D300s, D700, and my current D800e.

Images were more than acceptable up to the D700, and those were ok. Jumping to a 36mp sensor, and the lens wouldn't hold up. If you want "OK" images it will work. But if you are buying a D800 for stellar, sharp pictures, then don't waste your time and money. If you can't afford the new 80-400 G, then go for the 300mm f/4 instead.

I have pictures on my website with the combo, but they were not that spectacular.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. A couple of things. First, in my day to day commercial work I don't really use a long tele. That's why I use a D800 but am considering the older 80-400mm. The 80-400mm D can be found as low as $750 right now, so I was looking at it as a cheap way to 400mm while I test the viability of a new project I am working on. If I decide to move forward with the project I would sell the 80-400mm and get a 200-400mm f4. So I'm not overly concerned with image quality over the long term, I just want to see if it will be acceptable at 400mm for web use while I beta this project.

Thanks!

Josh

Even if you are just testing, you need some good glass.
There is a high chance that you will also find that the old 80_400 won't hold up on the D800, focusspeed is also pretty poor. Maybe rent the 200-400 for the days you wil use it? Or the new 80-400 (which is much cheaper). The new 80-400 and the 200-400 have almost the same IQ at f/5.6 btw! The only reason why you would go for the 200-400 is if you need the f/4 capapbilties.
