p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Want 70-200 f2.8: Go Used Nikon VR1 or Tamron VC ?

I am almost ready to buy my 70-200 f2.8 with VR or VC for my D600, I've saved almost 1500$ but still torn about what to buy.
A nice used Nikon 70200 f2.8 VR1 is about 1400 to 1600$
The Tamron f2.8 with VC is 1499$ amazon and has a 100$ rebate

I lean towards the Tamron.. is new and has 5 year warranty and in general the reviews and experiences looks like a great lens, lensrental.com and that nikonguy comments are really good and great value

I can't afford the VR2

What will be your advice?
Sorry if this is a recurring question, but the decision is driving me a little crazy...

Thank you !

I just got a VRII for $1730 from LensAuthority, it's on the way I think it's worth the extra $100-$150...

I had the VRI and it's no slouch. Very sharp in the center and AF is pretty fast, vignetting is easy to deal with in PP. I am yet to see how the VRII is different.

my 2 cents... if you make $ from your shots... Nikon.
If your one that will "always wonder if the other lens would have made the shot better", then Nikon.
If you shoot for the enjoyment (family friends etc...) Tamron and spend the extra $ on more toys

I make a little money taking pictures but photography is not my living
the money I make mostly I use to buy more photo gear
I am however one of those that say "mmm what would be if I had the Nikon?"

My tamron will be in tomorrow. I'll do some tests and report back. I've owned both Nikon's at some point.

Oh and you're local. I spend a lot of time out in Weston, maybe we can meet up and you can try it out.

It's used and everything is in mint condition except it has a couple of tiny coating scratches on front element that of course won't affect images. Comes with 90-day warranty. They're the same guys from Lensrentals and are known for their great business...

you say 'want' a 2.8, does that necessarily mean you 'need' a 2.8 for what you photograph? if not then look at the F4, it's everything and more (and less if you think size weight and price) than the 2.8 except for, well, the 2.8...and if you buy new you'd still have extra cash from what you've saved so far..just a thought..I owned both, both are exceptional, but I didn't need or want the 2.8 and all its heft anymore

I gave it a thought but
Yes I want and need f2.8, I do a lot of High school theatre, portrait, some sports (kids football, softball and baseball at badly lit fields) etc

Plus the Nikon f4 while I am sure is great, is 1399$, I prefer to have the f2.8 of the Tamron than the f4 of the Nikon

The-Digital-Image comparison tool puts the sharpness of the Tamron on par of the f4's Nikon at F4

I recently purchased two lenses from LensAuthority and they were both in excellent condition. I would not hesitate to buy from them again.

I've been shooting with the VI and the only thing about it is a little bit of vignetting that's a very simple fix in PP. I picked mine up on here last year for $1300 shipped and Paypal fees included so if imagine you can find one now for around the same. Love the lens and thought about selling it to get the VRII but just don't see the purpose actually.

Haven't used or seen the Tamron to touch it but have read good things about it and own several Tamron's I'm more than happy with.

My Tamron arrived about an hour. First impressions are very positive, vc works well with my shaky hands, build quality feels very nice. Only minor pet peeve is the zoom ring is on the end of the lens. Focus seems spot on with no adjustments. From the LCD the images seen very sharp. I have a shoot today, looking forward to using it. Seems like money well spent.

I bought my vr1 brand new for 1350...the prices are still that high 7+ years later?

I will add that sharpness isnt everything. how well it focuses and how fast it focuses are more important to me...not all 2.8 lenses are the same is my point.

It focuses just as fast as any brand 70-200 I've used. I haven't owned this one long enough to make a final decision on its quality and AF. Taking it out this weekend to shoot some car drifting.
