Here's another option: Not sure if he's received stock yet, but there's also Rob Skeoch in Burlington. Great guy to deal with for Zeiss lenses (and film/large format gear). If you do contact him, tell him I sent you... for a while he was including a B+W UV filter with Zeiss lens purchases with this referral, but not sure if it's still the case.

I haven't tried this myself, but based on 50mm Planar and 135mm APO Sonnar, I'd assume it's not really that hard to focus. To me, 135mm is easier than 50mm which itself is my favourite and something I've gotten used to. Takes practice, for sure, but that sharpness may help too. Perhaps one of the lucky ones who have this shares their findings, though.

So that's where it went. Eddie told me he had one and doesn't expect my Canon mount until the first week of December. So far I don't believe any Canon mount versions have been delivered anywhere.

You posted some wonderful photos with yours.

Sharp lenses are much easier to focus manually.

Also, MF lenses are much easier to focus than AF lenses in manual mode, as their design is optimized for this task, namely smooth and long throw.

Anxious to see more samples from the Otus.

As to the comments on the Leica R 100 Apo and bokeh issues, I have the lens and have had no issues with it. Even in the harshest of light on the background, it simply feathers. The Zeiss 100/2 is a lovely lens and indeed has different bokeh, with much less contrast. The linked photos from the other thread show loads of posterization in the bokeh for all three lenses. This is not derived from the lenses but instead JPG compression settings being too low. A shame for lens tests....

Jim

I have comparatively fewer shots with the Zeiss 100/2 since it was a rental to test it out, but here is a set of images with it:

Here is a much larger array with the Leica 100/2.8 APO:

Wonderful images posted here, but I'm starved for more while I wait for my pre-order to get fulfilled. Apparently Zeiss hasn't made any shipments in the ZE mount yet.

Jorge: I loved your unboxing video; I watched it three times. Usually such videos are a dreadful bore and uninteresting, but I guess my enthusiasm for this particular lens changes all that.

Posted many more from a day trip to the Oregon coast. Nice weather. Had to go. Nothing special, just snap shots around town and way home.

Some size comparison shots:

#1
50_1.4 ZE, Otus, 40_2.0 VL

#2
24-70 L, Otus, 135 L

Compared to the small Zeiss 50 1.4 ZE Planar sibling at the Planar's "achilles heel" (= minimum FD up to 2m), the bigger Otus takes clearly the lead....

Just watch the crops....
(LV focused on middle of barcode, tripod, Cam: Canon 1 Ds III)

#3
50_1.4 ZE@1.4 crop (0.6m FD)

#4
55_1.4 ZE@1.4 crop (0.6m FD) - (LV focused on middle of barcode)

Well, for the sake of reputation for the small Planar - it gets much better beyond 2m FD and/or with bigger apperture numbers around f/5.6.

I'm looking at the Otus images from this site:

And a couple of them appear to have a swirly type of distortion. The centre is creamy smooth, but the edges are in focus. So it looks like it's very distorted here...

Interesting. This kind of effect is in Sigma 50/1.4 too. Its background bokeh is creamy smooth in about DX frame, but outside of it, it is worse. I have a picture of this in my article on bokeh:
http://jtra.cz/stuff/essays/bokeh/index.html

Of course there is no comparison in sharpness and LoCA:
