I am planning some vintage car video-shooting. Here vintage cars soon go into winter hibernation so it it's mostly a spring project.

Any suggestions for a car rig for on-board external shooting?

The first 20 secs in this video shows the kind of shooting I am planning. Camera will be a NEX 5 series so it will not be overly heavy but of course I want it to be somewhat safe from a tarmac drop :-)

Attach to a cargo carrier or bed extender? (only if the car(s) has a towing hitch)...

That looks interesting bjornssh. But would you really trust a suction cup attached on a vertical side surface of a car (usually slightly curved)? Intuition says no...(?)

mcbroomf, unfortunatly most of these cars wont have towing hitches.

How about a strap on bike rack? The only issue is that the straps will be visible if your footage includes the boot/trunk.

Thanks and right Mike, that made me think about solutions like this (done for those annoying caravan draggers on the roads..)

The question now is how to securely fit a reliable camera-mount on a small-diameter pole (horizontal or vertical or in between).

and...

I suspect the shots in the video where done with some thing simple like the first image, but there are plenty of other ways. Vacuum cups are very strong and can hold very well, but not indefinitely.

I've shot time lapse, at normal road speeds with the following 2 rigs, using a Canon 40D.

John, the last two images really caught my interest! I assume these are three holders for a tripod which would provide more or less all degrees of freedom I can think of. What are these, any ebay link/brand or so?

This is one of the featured cars in question

Nice Volvo!

For the red car rig you need:
1/ Manfrotto 190 tripod or any tripod with a 16mm or 5/8th bottom leg diameter. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/831461-REG/Manfrotto_MT190A3P_190_More_3_Section_Aluminum.html

2/ 3x Manfrotto Gaga Gobo, or similar. These are a 16mm or 5/8th clamp and fit the bottom leg of the Manfrotto 190. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/153403-REG/Avenger_D250_Gag_Gobo.html . The tripod legs fit into the Gag Gobo. I wouldn't recommend this setup for driving at speed (but you could drive slowly, in a safe environment and possibly with someone supporting the end of the tripod, and then speed up the video)!

3/ 3x vacuum cups, take your pick, there are plenty to choose from. The 'Woods Powrgrip' are the most practical, no idea where you can get them locally.

4/ 3x 16mm threaded shafts to fit vacuum cup.

This image uses the same components except the tripod is a custom plate instead of the Manfrotto 190.

If you look at the filmtools site you will probably find everything you need:

http://www.filmtools.com/sucuvcu.html
http://www.filmtools.com/succupmoun.html

You can make your own light weight 16mm clamps, which I've done:

http://photocornucopia.com/images/Rig%20Shots/r_146_pc_400.jpg

The second setup, on the blue car, is a different tripod, different leg diameter, different clamps. No point detailing it as the first setup is essentially the same but lighter and easier to use.
